Wow.
This is a film that needs to be watched 3 times to appreciate.
Subtle comedy.
Oscar worthy performances.
Ingenious historical and religious allegories and biblical allusions (Rasputia=God).
Honestly, no jokes or sarcasm, my love for this film is as big as Rasputia herself.
'How you doing?'
Quite literally the perfect movie.
Everything from the acting right down to the fucking key grip screams perfection so loud it's practically deafening. The story is full of unexpected twists and turns that will leave even the most dedicated cinephile on the edge of their seat in awe of something truly unlike anything anybody has ever seen.
Some say it doesn't hold up, some say it is downright unfunny and racist, but I disagree. I think it's one of the best character studies ever put to celluloid. Norbit has what you'd call a "character arc", y'see. He grows up shy but he gains a confident disposition by the end. Eddie Murphy plays three characters in this film. Norbit, Rasputia and…
Watched this twice in less than a month. I probably deserve to be institutionalized. 5 stars.
Richard Brody once wondered what it might have been like for Eddie Murphy, a troubled but prolific and talented comedian and film caricaturist, to have been nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Norbit.
I'm not opposed to the idea; I like Eddie Murphy, always have. But consider the optics. Norbit was, in fact, nominated for an Oscar for Best Makeup in 2008, losing to La Vie En Rose. This was the year the Coens finally swung for a Best Picture win with No Country for Old Men -- the year Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor for growling and glinting his way through There Will Be Blood, an okay picture. Day-Lewis's co-nominees were: the great Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises);…
In 1987, Eddie Murphy stepped onto the stage at New York's Felt Forum to perform a stand up routine entitled Raw.
In the 93 minutes that followed, Murphy delivered a set that contained 223 utterances of the word fuck, and ran the gamut from Bill Cosby's prudishness, to nightclub brawls.
The set was electrifying. It was fast, it was furious, it was, well...raw. It was also fucking hilarious.
This is not that Eddie Murphy.
The only other scenario I see myself watching this movie again is in hell while satan is forcing me to
ive actually become retarded enough to find this funny. a serious life reevaluation is in order

The movie opens with a baby being thrown out of a car window. I think the moment I noticed how cursed this movie was is when I noticed that the asian stereotype orphanage caregiver was Eddie Murphy in yellowface. This movie isn’t cursed it’s fucking DAMNED. Just terrible and meanspirited in every possible way. Thanks Brian Wilson.
Just probably about what I thought it’d be. But if it was anyone else other than Eddie Murphy it would be terrible. Even in not great movies he brings a certain charm.
I was told this was a comedy but a lot of it was so depressing! I told my fiancé that if it didn’t have a happy ending that I’d go downtown and protest all by myself and I’d have explain to people I’m protesting the ending of Norbit but luckily that’s not the reality we live in.
This was a beautiful story and for some reason everyone I follow who’s seen it gave it a half star, ya’ll are crazy!
“How you dern?”
Completely underrated comedy that would be a fondly remembered hit had it been released in the 80s.
Watched this for about the 5th time, this time with my kids, who are young enough still to sit back and enjoy a comedy movie for the laughs and comic timing of the cast. I hope I have raised them well enough to take these life qualities into adulthood.
Unfortunately released in an era where folk have been raised inherently miserable, and self righteous, trawling though movies to find something to be offended by, rather than sitting back and learning how to laugh at themselves and others, like we used to do when the world was a happier, more hopeful place.
Eddie Murphy didn’t lose it, you did.
Somehow more offensive than I thought it would be?
Whilst being more boring too. It doesn’t have enough craziness to save it from its ridiculousness and when every joke and scene is centred around being obnoxiously horrible, it’s impossible to enjoy any of the potentially entertaining parts (which there aren’t many anyway).
I nearly gave this one star for Kristen Schaal saying “I want to be a hoe, how do I apply?” but that’s nowhere near enough and says everything about the rest of the films quality (it says a lot about Kristen Schaal too).
It’s not the worst it could be in terms of vulgarity, I sort of wish it was more absurd, rather than a 50/50 split of mediocre and disgusting, earning itself a worthy 1/2 star. It doesn’t deserve anything more, neither does it deserve my or your energy, please don’t watch it.
