OLD HENRY is my kind of western: a brutal slice of throwback genre entertainment told with unforgiving gravitas. The under appreciated Tim Blake Nelson receives a showcase role worthy of his talents while Stephen Dorff sets himself up as a menacing & nasty villain. Polished & badass filmmaking.
It’s nice to watch a movie that’s not trying to melt my brain or give me a heart attack for a change. Old Henry is just telling a fine western story in the simplest way possible. With the help of its great cast, likable characters and beautiful dialogue, it manages to pull it off.
In many western reviews I keep saying the genre “died” or became “incapacitated” for a time and that its absence still exists today, yet I keep finding incredibly well made westerns hidden among the tumbleweeds; once smothered in the trail dust of the modern-day audience that latches interest onto the next trendy genre. I’m beginning to believe the genre has never died or even waned in its general quality (undoubtedly in quantity), and has always had a knack for being entertaining while having something good to say. Old Henry is one of the finest films of the year and then some.

Old Henry is a watchable as hell Western. Once again, another movie with an unexpected action star. Tim Blake Nelson pours every emotion in his body to play Henry. Also, Stephen Dorff is pretty damn good at acting bad.
If a good Western is your thing, don’t hesitate to check out Old Henry.
Old Henry is that modern Western rarity: the lean no-nonsense throwback with no pretensions beyond wanting to play in the genre’s sandbox and execute those familiar tropes with its own flair. Economically plotted and skillfully paced, this is a small-scale frontier pressure-cooker: father, son, isolated Oklahoma farm, satchel of cash, gunshot rider, a menacingly smarmy Stephen Dorff and his posse close behind. Director/writer Potsy Ponciroli lights the fuse early and delights in the winding tension and spurts of conflict that follow. The small scale being a COVID limitation becomes obvious in hindsight but never intrudes in the moment.

"Old Henry" ist ein Western und dreht sich um Henry, der, seitdem seine Frau vor 10 Jahren verstorben ist, alleine mit seinem Sohn auf einer abgelegenen Farm lebt. Eines Tages taucht ein Pferd mit blutverschmierten Sattel am Horizont auf. Nach kurzer Suche findet Henry auch den schwer verletzten Reiter, der behauptet, ein Sheriff zu sein. Er hat eine Tasche voller Geld bei sich und wird von einer Gruppe verfolgt, die beteuern, ihrerseits Männer des Gesetzes zu sein. Henry muss entscheiden, wem er glaubt. Als Henrys Farm schlussendlich belagert wird, zeigt sich, dass auch Henry einige Geheimnisse mit sich spazieren trägt.

Tim Blake Nelson gets his very own John Wick set in The Old West, and y'know what? I'm all fucking for it, because Tim Blake Nelson fucking deserves it. When it comes to character actors, he's in the upper echelon, he's all the way up in the goddamn stratosphere, baby. Old Henry is a sturdy, well-made and well-paced little western with some great shootouts, even better dialogue and a dynamite villainous performance from Stephen Dorff. It unfortunately suffers from one twist too many right at the end (in my opinion at least), but nevertheless, Old Henry is a damn fine hidden-gem of a western that's very engaging. Saddle up cowboys and gals. Yeehaw.

The western has been mainstream American directors favorite art film genre since around the biccentenial, a curious fate for an action genre whose best virtues were usually economical and spare down. Old Henry splits the difference in that it is essentially a B western of the kind that remained alive on TV with self conscious arty pretensions. The shadow of Unforgiven are all over it, to the point that it ends with a clear attempt of doing an Eastwoodian final shot. Some of those attempts land, the melancholia feels earned, the somber cinematography works, some of the attempts of mythic weight doesn't and some of the more self conscious touches feel off.
