can't decide between being a retro children movie or an adult audience thriller, fails at both ultimately. a needless and redundant product lulling you to sleep in the cinema chair.
Not the best "Oliver Twist" adaptation, missing the charm of such films as Carol Reed's "Oliver!" for example. The quality is there, the cinematography, sound, all the technical aspects and good acting is there as well. It just lacks on a real emotional core.
A fine film but did we really need another Oliver Twist? Also Polanski does not bring anything new to the story. Well at least I can finally safely say I have seen all the feature films by Polanski.
Inflation went up. You could buy a boy with 5 pounds back then.
Polanksi adapting Dicken's work had all the right conditions to be a masterpiece, but something went wrong. There's nothing bad about this film, but the right word to describe it would be: tasteless. The characters are monodimensional, it's two clean and fake, and the tension of the story never stays for the whole time.
I love the original musical oliver but this remake of it without the music is a bland dull and extremely watered down movie that has only one good thing Ben Kingsley as my favourite character in this film and the original oliver, fagin.
Pretty straight forward adaptation of Oliver Twist. Expected more from Polanski, still entertaining with phenomenal acting. Ben Kingsley stands out, sometimes verging into overacting territory. The kid playing Oliver feels underused surprisingly. The darker moments aid over something like Oliver and Company, still didn’t connect with me too much overall. I think it spends a lot of time to hit necessary beats, as opposed to organically growing its characters.
Turbo the dog was very cute in the role of Bullseye, otherwise nothing else to note.
