For the longest time, I thought me and my siblings were the only kids in the whole world who had seen this. Until YEARS later I quoted this in front of a coworker (because most of what comes out of my mouth are random, mostly obscure movie quotes) and she immediately knew what I was talking about. We’re best friends now and finally rewatched it together.
Weirdly...kinda holds up?
I've had the VHS of this lying around for ages and finally decided to revist it. I didn't remember much about it from when I was little only that I found it VERY TRAUMATISING. It's still pretty upsetting but its also mostly crap. The songs are particularly ridiculous, but you know.. it's cute. I suppose.
I lost it at " GOODBYE MOTHER!" and couldn't stop laughing for the rest of the film.
“You know, Abigail, sometimes I wish I was brave... like you.
You are.”

I have been watching so many environmental films that were released during the 1990s, especially “FernGully: The Last Rainforest.” But there was one environmental film that was barely known to the public eye and that was “Once Upon a Forest.”
PROS:
~ The music by the late James Horner was simply beautiful, especially Cornelius’ song “Please Wake Up.”
~The movie subverted the expectations of how humans are treated in environmental films as they are shown as making mistakes, but are not evil in this movie.
~The characters are well developed in this film, especially with how the furlings are learning to…
the shitty version of fern gully. i like the dancing bird part. the animals are weird.
90s kids films are especially traumatic. The inciting incident in this film is a truck filled with poison gas crashing in the middle of the forest, with the gas then leaking out in apocalyptic fashion. A girl badger (voiced by a very young Elisabeth Moss) goes to her home, finds her parents dead and is almost killed by the gas herself. The rest of the film follows a trio of stock silly animals on a quest to get the herb necessary to revive their friend. And Michael Crawford sings an uber depressing song about hoping Elisabeth Moss doesn't die which is so sad that he struggled not to cry while singing it. Kids movies!
Also appearing is a gospel choir…
An often incoherent and jumbled up mess of a plot with little personality, but it's inoffensive enough and still has a good amount of effort behind it that it doesn't feel like a complete waste of time.
The character design in particular is too simple and uninspired with nothing that really stands out. The animation itself barely seems to scrape over what could be considered "feature length quality" but at least there's always a sense of movement and can manage to remain engaging at times. But possibly one of the most unfortunate aspects is that there some fantastic painted backgrounds that will be forever confined to this movie. It's always a shame when there's some genuinely good artwork that exists…
The last animated feature film release in theatres by Hanna-Barbera Productions has its heart in the right place (with an ecologist adventure starring animals), but fails in the animation department; looking like a second-rate Don Bluth film from the 90s. Still, it’s a nice kid’s film with a good voice cast.

I have the faintest memories from watching this film on vhs when I was between 2-5 years old. Glad I figured out what film it was after all these years
