My favorite part is when 101 dogs try to disguise themselves as ... 101 dirty dogs. “Look! An enormous pack of over 100 dogs! We found them! Wait... these dogs are dirty. Must be another enormous pack of over 100 dogs. Let’s keep looking.”
Wow. 1961 and these guys nailed it. Look at the colors, the masterful hand-drawn animation, the emotions on the humans' faces. This is impeccable craftsmanship here.
"101 Dalmations" is one of Disney's finest "old-school" animated films.
so cute but i was a little distracted by the person next to me on the plane watching a show where anna kendrick was watching porn. Titty on the screen
"We'll have a dalmatian plantation!" or "Kill two for matching clogs!"
So much weird texture here, all bound up in those gorgeous Xeroxed inks, everything has a dusty coating of toner. And what's with the vague anti-capitalist vibe? There's a whole middle section here that takes place in this decrepit mansion, sort of a crumbling bourgeois symbol ruled over by Cruella, a vicious one-percenter who lives only to consume conspicuously. While the puppies escape, two henchmen watch a bizarre game show called "What's My Crime?" in which convicted criminals are offered a vacation for stumping a panel. Plus the dogs are all black and white, hello?! Ok, so it's not actually coherent in the slightest, but it is pretty loaded.
roger selling a song about how terrible cruella de vil is after she steals their dogs and getting it played on the radio is 👑 shit
hadn't watched this in like ten years and i can now confirm that i am a 101 dalmatians stan
if this is someone else's favourite Disney movie, please speak up, I don't want to be alone here
800th Film!! Party! Woo!!
As I grow older, I start sympathizing more with the villains in movies; especially the ridiculous ones like Yzma and, in this case, Cruella DeVille. Some of the Disney villains just have unlimited crazy currency. What they say may mean nothing to them, but they mean everything to me. Cruella De Ville has some fabulous moments and is a fashion icon. The main plot of the film is about all these dalmatians randomly disappearing because some lady wants their fur/skin for coats. Disney manages to take this disturbing plot and turn it into a family-friendly flick for everyone to enjoy. I feel there is no development with any of the characters besides…
A little bit jazzy. What comes through here is how the filmmakers marry the image to the score; Disney does this a lot, but here it's very distinct in places. Pratfalls and slips are accompanied by a little flourish of the ever-present music, often a variation on "Cruella De Vil," a song that no doubt got Roger sued for defamation and/or invasion of privacy. The film rolls along quickly at first, but slows later to focus on strange little details of the animal world: the Twilight Bark and the soot sequence both stand out as long forays into detail while other details (the courtship of both central couples, for instance, or Cruella's backstory) are abstracted. This doesn't hurt the film,…
