It’s 1982, and Taeko is 27 years old, unmarried, and has lived her whole life in Tokyo. She decides to visit her family in the countryside, and as the train travels through the night, memories flood back of her younger years: the first immature stirrings of romance, the onset of puberty, and the frustrations of math and boys. At the station she is met by young farmer Toshio, and the encounters with him begin to reconnect her to forgotten longings. In lyrical switches between the present and the past, Taeko contemplates the arc of her life, and wonders if she has been true to the dreams of her childhood self.

my god this is flooring. its framing device should be so stilted--here's a movie consisting of random flashbacks to a woman's life at age 10! but it feels so seamless and true to life. who among us doesn't randomly fixate on the small injustices done to us as children, or, more importantly, our own awkward mistakes and their imagined reverberations?
eating the pineapple! the conversation about cloudy days! and then THAT ENDING. I feel very lucky to have seen this!!!

Disney won't release this in the US because it acknowledges the existence of menstruation.
But Pom Poko, with its plot centered around the magical powers of giant testicles, gets a fancy DVD release with a BluRay apparently on the horizon.

For various reasons, the themes of memory, specifically of self-discovery through memory, hit home tonight. This quiet drama about a woman's unbidden journey through specific memories is a work of simple parallels of change and growing up, of dreams and connections, and the sweet pastoral scenery depicted somehow heightens the experience. This film has that Ghibli animation that is warm in tone, detailed but not necessarily realistic, emotive and charming, and in its best moments, it is breathtaking.

“If today’s no good, you’ll have tomorrow. If tomorrow’s no good, you’ll have the next day.”
the fact that this film perfectly nails how society was/is obsessed with controlling female bodies in every moment of their existence as birthing pods and housewife material and at the same time is completely unable to deal with periods and other natural processes said bodies go through... damn.
moreover, Taeko embodies this oppressive gendered trauma by being torn between wanting to live freely on her own in the city and the undying urge to settle down in the country, which she feels would compromise the autonomy she believes in and has built for herself. even though she loves the modest hard worker existence there…

only yesterday has been a gnawing gap in studio ghibli’s filmography for me, but it was certainly worth the wait.
this just quietly floored me. it has a beautiful lyrical quality that captures the hazy make-up of distant memories gone by. give me more personal dramas like this.

I turn 23 this year and I'm graduating out of college in a few months. I have been reflecting on a lot of things in my life probably more than ever before. I also been thinking about my future and what I wanna do. I often forget that my memories are no longer reality, although they once were. Sometimes my memories are the only good things happening in my life right now.
My younger self haunts me all the time. Mostly because I don't recognize her. I'm still figuring out if that's a good thing or not. I've been thinking about everyone who has come into my life. I often leave re-visting my memories with a lot of bitterness, regret, and pain. But now I'm starting to think these memories just serve the purpose to remind me of the good times and maybe they'll eventually lead me where I'm suppose to be.
