How is NOBODY talking about all the Indiana Jones references??? I mean SO many!!! This was great, even coming out of Pixar. It only feels like a “generic animated kids movie” because of Chris Pratt’s voice acting. Besides that everything about this feels so original. Honestly really sad that the release was so overshadowed by everything going on, especially considering maybe it’s the kind of movie we all need right now? /:
The first third set me up for a grueling time but the film gets better as it goes on! If the dad stuff doesn’t get you crying, the brother stuff absolutely will. That third act is so lovely and fun and has a surprisingly simple but terrific climax with one of my favorite “creatures” in recent memory. It ain’t Pixar’s finest, but even A- Pixar is a pretty good film from anyone else. Don’t go in expecting a wild, wide vision of magical realism though– the most inventive fantastical creation of the film is a cop that is a good boyfriend. (Did Lana Del Rey ghostwrite on this)
Not looking forward to yet another inevitable week of think pieces dedicated to an explicitly-queer minor character in a Disney film, though!
so this tells us that humanity possessed actual fucking magic but we were too lazy to exercise it so we picked consumerism instead? sounds legit
Just about all of Pixar’s movies have a meta element about their own creation, so the fact that Onward is about trying to rediscover magic in a world that used to be full of wonder is pretty interesting.

most unrealistic part is that the fuckhead centaur cop can get the dummy thicc hot mom, in what universe???
I wish I could say that this is funnier and has a more coherent story than the average D&D session, but...
...at least the ending was good?
While Onward is undoubtedly on the lower side of films to come out from Pixar Studios, I was still pleasantly surprised in how well executed this whole film is in many fundamental aspects that Pixar put to considerable use once more in their first original motion picture in three years.
The specific story itself involves two elf brothers from this more magical-like turned modern world, voiced by none other than Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, as they both set out on a noble quest in this so they could try to acquire an enchanted artifact that will bring back their recently deceased father as they both never truly got a chance to be with him when he was still living.…
me crying over a pixar movie and the fact that magic isn’t real yup what’s new keep scrolling
It’s nice that Pixar spent $150 million to help one dude process his dad dying before he was born - Male trauma is really the driving force of all their films except for Cars 2, which is about spies
No spoilers but Octavia Spencer plays the Manticore who in her very first scene traps a bunch of teenagers in a burning building
A really fun movie with a fully realized world, that goes to the next level with a heart-wrenching but truly perfect ending. The choice to not show the conversation with the father is just so mature and unexpected from a Pixar film that I was kind of awe-struck by it.
Pixar really is good at making relatable characters for I too hate to merge onto the highway.
For real though, this was a lot more enjoyable than Soul for me, a lot more emotional and definitely more aimed at kids.
Y'know the end was definitely emotional, kinda felt a little like they rehashed the Frozen ending a bit. Wish I didn't have to see a centaur cop. Also remember how they proudly announced the first open lesbian Disney character? 🤡 AND THEN IT WAS ALSO A COP AND NOT EVEN THE COOL MANTICORE WITH THE SWORD?
A great tale exploring the bringing together of two brothers going on a quest, a film about finding yourself and appreciating your loved ones.
i feel like something is missing from this movie and i just can’t place it. idk. it made me cry but idk a lot of things make me cry. very sweet story and whatever but it was just missing MORE. i feel like this could’ve been more.
The emotional journey of the main character works pretty well, despite it being a thousand years old scheme that we’ve seen a million times in movies.
Maybe I’m getting too old for animated films, maybe I’m too spoiled by “Soul” and other Pixar doings, but to me this one is so mediocre even in the very ideas it presents to the audience. Learn from the past, don’t chase the unreachable, look what’s in front of you. What a revelation!
