Totally standard teledoc form but this passes the "would this be better as a magazine article?" test with flying colors simply because the guys involved are so unashamed and the story really just is that tantalizingly colorful. Pretty wild.
For many years now we've been sold in the glamorous life on the gangsters, not only through Scorsese films but through series and documentaries. This time Showtime joins the game with the wildest tale of three men who quickly found complete success in the booming era of cocaine back in the 90s and helped building some little empires in places like MIami and a Russia coming out of the Soviet era. But all of this peaked by the end when they came with the wildest idea of translating their merchandise: a submarine. This is the story of their lives and how they ended up coming with this crazy idea.
We also get another familiar glimpse not only into the lives…
This documentary is batshit
Amazing characters
Tony is my favorite doc personality since Tiger King
such a legend
it's on Netflix so you have to watch it
This is one of those "I can't believe real people lived these lives" documentaries, almost on the level of Cocaine Cowboys. It wasn't as stylized with the production value of Cowboys, as it was a lot of talking heads. Those talking heads did rub me slightly the wrong way with their consistent boastful tone, however, I can't fault them or the film too much because of the insane experiences they had and the fascinating stories we get to experience.
"what is the difference between the agent and the special agent, why he special?"
This documentary felt like it was literally on cocaine - which given the subject matter was kind of fitting. This story is insane. It somehow makes the likes of "Wolf of Wall Street", "American Made" and "War Dogs" all seem a little mundane in comparison.
Who knows how much of all this was actually as true as said, but it makes for an amazingly wild ride nonetheless. You can't help but root for the guys success in a way - which may conflict some viewers. I found it hard not to admire their ingenuity at times and sheer brazenness.
It also provided numerous laughs throughout. And Vanilla Ice.
Imagine every player (criminal organisation and law enforcement agency) in every crime film you have ever seen - then combine the whole lot together, slap a true story on it and you get "Operation Odessa".
Best documentary I have seen in a while.
The characters sound like they have been torn out of a GTA game and their coke-fuelled tales of excess make for diverting material. Apart from this, as a documentary it doesn't ask any other questions of its colourful cast and the facts are presented in a patchwork that feels rushed in parts.
Operation Odessa has the energy of three college dudes bragging about how much they drank over the weekend.
The film opens with an amazing hook, but really begins to falter once it gets into a rhythm and never recovers. The endless barrage of stock footage got on my nerves before too long, so the only thing of substance here are talking heads and it all felt too scripted and polished to feel authentic. Gratuitous and repetitive in equal measure, Operation Odessa is essentially one long powerpoint presentation given by folks I didn't want to spend this much time with.
PS look at me go, I watched two films with Operation in the title in a row #killingit
Un documentaire « popcorn » sur une sacrée histoire de gangsters, période Miami Vice, qui voulaient acheter un sous-marin à l’URSS en pleine débâcle pour le vendre à Pablo Escobar.
Divertissant.
It is SO impossibly hard for me to not see these guys as cool. Seriously. Impossible.
This was a fairly simple and straightforward documentary, but the Ocean's series type of soundtrack and the viby editing did a great job at matching the subjects' personalities which were... Really something.
Tony, Juan and Tarzan are three badass motherfuckers lol don't @ me.
