In writer/director Paolo Rotondo’s debut feature, three teenagers on the run break into a deluxe Waiheke Island home and find themselves caught in a tense psychodrama with the conflicted owner.
Micro-budget New Zealand drama set on Waiheke Island off the coast from Auckland.
Three teenage siblings on the run arrive on the island and spend the afternoon shoplifting and bag-snatching before breaking in to one of the luxury homes. They assume it's an empty holiday home and that they'll be able to stay in it for a few weeks, but the owner returns that night. They initially knock him out and tie him up but then one of them has an accident and breaks his ankle. The owner is an emotional wreck following the suicide of his only son, and when the siblings finds this out they empathise with him, and he starts to empathise with them when he finds…
This was just sweet had a lot more of an emotional story with complex characters than I thought it was going to have although it didn't dive into their conflicts as much as I would have hoped.

What I watched in January
Amazing film, Loved the Premiere! The film gives you a lot to think about - what is going on in this world!
I appreciated the narrative’s simplicity - some kids break into a house, get confronted by the homeowner, and eventually come to somewhat befriend him before they’re faced with the police. Rotondo’s direction allows the atmosphere to develop out of the situation, albeit hanging too heavily onto certain musical embellishments which feel like as unnecessary as the TV-style opening hook. In its best moments the film exhibits a patience that draws out a specific feeling within its sterile setting and lingers longer than its dramatic construction.
A lovingly crafted and pretty effective home-invasion story made on Auckland’s Waiheke Island for a minuscule budget with a largely young and unknown cast. Uniformly strong performances from the antagonists, but the father/son relationship behind much of the film’s emotional weight didn’t really work for me.
