David, a struggling comedy writer fresh off from breaking up with his boyfriend, moves from New York City to Sacramento to help his sick mother. Living with his conservative father and much-younger sisters for the first time in ten years, he feels like a stranger in his childhood home. As his mother’s health declines, David frantically tries to extract meaning from this horrible experience and convince everyone (including himself) that he's "doing okay.”

As a gay man who moved from a small town to a bigger city, I can attest to the painful accuracy of so many details found in "Other People."
I groaned out loud when all his relatives kept calling him a "big city boy," was in hysterics when they were eating at Applebee's (already so accurate) and the dad said "bet they don't have fries this good in the big city," and don't get me started on "Drops of Jupiter."
All these little details already elevated this movie for me, but then you add a poignantly average depiction of gay life (complete with embarrassingly realistic sex scene), a sweetly affecting performance by Jesse Plemons, and a heartbreaking turn from Molly…
a 30-year-old writer named David goes home to care for a parent who's dying of cancer before Christmas. I couldn't relate.
not necessarily a great movie (it's a bit sketchy in key places, and Bradley Whitford has a doozy of a line about "debating" his son's sexuality), but trust me when i say that it captures its subject with rare accuracy and nuance. eerie how the process is so indivisibly personal, and yet threaded with so many commonalities. uncanny, really. and while i didn't think the performances were necessarily anything special... other then how Jesse Plemons nails how it feels to say "it's fine. i mean, it's not fine. but it's fine" for 9 months... i don't know what to say to anyone who thinks they were overblown.

- this movie singlehandedly destroyed the stigma of every shitty "you have cancer" movie I've ever seen. and I'm talking about that fault in our stars shit, the idea that with sickness and suffering comes some supernatural revelation or some lesson that somehow makes everything ok.
- and I think what made this movie so effective is the fact that they don't spin the disease around to be some sort of "gift from god", some plot point that teaches everyone a lesson about life.
- in fact they make fun of the people who see it that way. b/c if we're being honest, that idea is such…
I have a lot of problems with this movie, like the sometimes forced humor and weird scattered plot, but Molly Shannon gives a breathtakingly real performance. Considering I have been in a situation with a family member who has cancer, her performance was realistic and heartbreaking.
