i (negatively) reviewed OUTLAW KING when it premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival.
Director David Mackenzie then cut 23 minutes out of the film.
this "review" includes the inside story of what happened, as well as my thoughts on the new & improved version of the movie.

That night was supposed to be a celebration. After more than five years of work on a rough and rowdy medieval epic several times larger than anything he’d ever made before (including his Best Picture-nominated “Hell or High Water”), and a desperate race to cut the thing together in time for its glitzy debut, “Outlaw King” director David Mackenzie had finally made it to the majestic Princess of Wales Theatre, where…
i didn't watch this whole thing and I really don’t care to but Chris Pine's dick shows up at 1:27:50 :)
extremely impressive opening tracking shot and then kind of “okay, fine!” from there
also props to aaron taylor-johnson for finding his niche as an actor as a complete nut
idk if Game of Thrones has just trained my eyes to associate all medieval shit with television now but between the goofy costumes/accents, modern handheld photography (with the occasional overly ostentatious camera move) and severely pompous tone this was ultimately way funnier to me than i think it's supposed to be. that being said, the combat is bruuuuuutal and despite its best efforts this is so flagrantly uncool that i can't help but kinda respect it. also my man chris has got some serious pine if u know what i mean.
Accents can be the making or breaking of a film's quest for authenticity. As a Scot, we take exception to outsiders taking liberties with our brogue, but in David Mackenzie's Outlaw King we needn't have worried that he'd let us down with his casting choices. For someone born in Los Angeles, Chris Pine manages a very decent Scottish accent, as does High Wycombe born Aaron Taylor-Johnson, in two roles that more than honour the historical figures they portray. A film about arguably Scotland's most famous King was more than overdue, but Braveheart's less than historically accurate account of William Wallace's rebellious uprising against Edward I damaged the integrity of Scottish history in favour of cinematic poetic license for thrills. Mel…
Nicholas Devereaux, Prince Charming, Captain James Kirk and now King Robert the Bruce. Chris Pine really is royalty!
