  I met Julis Avery on the festival circuit 9 years ago when he had his short Jerrycan doing the rounds. It is a really solid short and anyone who saw it knew Avery was going places. He reminds me of a young George Miller meets John Milius. He made his first feature Son of a Gun in 2014. Showed a lot of promise and a knack for action and violent set-pieces.

  Cut to 2018... he's making films for J.J. Abrams. And Overlord is a very fun, pulpy genre film that shows Avery can direct HUGE set pieces will skill. He's being primed for some major blockbusters in the near future, I'm sure.

  Takes a bit too long to get rolling but once it does it's very silly and very, very wet. There's real glee in the splatter. With so much genre cinema lately seeming like a long episode of "Black Mirror", it's nice to see one that's a bit more "Tales From the Crypt".

  This was very fun....or I mean the last 30 minutes were. The rest wasn’t bad by any means, though I will say the dialogue was god awful in some scenes (nothing more generic than a good ‘CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE.) But yeah, after getting through the end I was kinda bummed that so much potential was wasted for the first 2/3 of this. But to highlight some positives, BIG shoutout to whoever did the sound design as well as hair and makeup. This SHOULD get some Oscar recognition for sound mixing IMO but I’m doubtful. Anyways, very glad I caught this in theatres.

  A.V. Club review. Nothing in this got nearly as visceral a crowd reaction as did our collective realization that we were (on first attempt) mistakenly being shown Bohemian Rhapsody. A few people who'd seen it knew right away, thanks to the modified Fox fanfare (shredded on guitar), and then at the first sight of Malek the whole theater exploded, in a way that I don't think would have been as emphatic had it been, say, A Star Is Born.

  A no-nonsense, rip-roaring great time that never holds back on the red stuff and cuts right to the chase, Overlord is both a hugely entertaining war thriller as well as another shining sign that 2018 has been a phenomenal year for horror, with gorgeous cinematography, flawless sound design, fun characters, excellent performances, haunting atmosphere, intense action scenes, and a fast-paced story rich with interesting ideas that are executed mostly very well.

  Ultimately pretty boring, with an uneven mix of standard wartime adventure and B-movie body manipulation, never fully reconciling into a single whole. Looked pretty shitty too, with many opportunities for atmosphere squandered by exhausting handheld and messy cutting. Still, a bunch of nazis get blown to shreds and there's a gooey scientist lab, so that's neat. Ends with a Nas song. It's fine.

  not convinced this has fully thought through its use of this setting—a bit too much typical WWII drama played straight here to justify some of the ways this wants to employ jewish bodies for horror later—but once this hits the subterranean lab it has real moments of a true-blue exploitation facemelter. impressively vivid body mutilations, blood mist and brain matter; like george a. romero's Southern Comfort, there's even a re-animated head on a gurney (connected to nothing except for a spinal cord) straight up Day of the Dead style! might've loved the 80-minute version of this that stuck to that and left the broad archetypes of the men-on-a-mission/nazi thriller stuff to a world where Inglorious Basterds doesn't already exist.
