PASSENGERS WRITER 1: what do we name jennifer lawrence's character who is woken up from deep sleep by a man
WRITER 2: um.... aurora? lol
WRITER 1: greg your talent is unparalleled. here are my keys go fuck my wife
PASSENGERS ends with an Imagine Dragons song about gravity. I'm not really sure what else needs to be said.
(okay, one more thing… an errant thought i had watching this watered down spectacle, which has been scientifically smoothed down for the lowest common denominator: the difference between studio films and indie films is significantly greater than the difference between film and television).
(okay okay, one MORE thing:
Chris Pratt: "i just wanted to give you some space."
Jennifer Lawrence: "SPACE is the *last* thing i need!"
end scene.)
jennifer lawrence is kind of like a john green book. when i first read one of his books i thought he's a great writer but then realised he's not versatile at all and all his stories are the same like how at first i thought jlaw was a good actress but then realised she's the same in every. fucking. role.
i hate jennifer "im just a regular person" lawrence, chris "playing andy dwyer was the highlight of my career" pratt and hetero "id do crazy shit just so i dont have to die alone" sexuals
Imagine: you're awakened 89 years early but instead of Chris Pratt you're greeted by Danny DeVito
imagine being so desperate for human contact that you think spending the rest of your life with only jennifer lawrence for company isn't such a bad idea
huh. didn't... hate this. premise is solid, there are real ideas here about isolation and romance founded on betrayal, and for at least its first 2/3s it treats pratt's undoubtably horrific act as nothing less than what it is: a disgusting, selfish choice, recognizably akin to rape/murder, made by a desperate creep. that he doesn't even look around for a fellow engineer or a doctor or anyone who might have skills to help him, and instead zeroes in on sexy young blonde, is absolutely the point. the bigger problem here is morten tyldum, who is incapable of giving these events the proper focus—this is a gross movie, intentionally framed from the pov of an abuser, so why is this so corporate, sexless and inoffensive? (spoiler: $$$$) where's the sleaze? the horror? the pain? can't help but imagine how good this would be with a subtle rewrite and paul verhoeven.
