“Never having seen a Satyajit Ray film is like never having seen the sun or the moon” - Akira Kurosawa
Where to even begin with this film. Firstly this was Satyajit Ray’s debut film Pather Panchali was a very important new voice in cinema that was heard all over the world. A depiction of rural Bengali life in a style inspired by Italian neorealism, is a story about a struggling family with the son Apu being the main focus of the trilogy.
Every single shot in this film can framed on your wall and would always look beautiful. The way that this rural life is shot can give a claustrophobic feel to everything, but when the fields are shown you see many sweeping wide and landscape shots. And the music is so memorable and will never get out of your head.
I’ll get around to the other two films soon. Hopefully they are as good as this one.
