I’m sure I saw this years ago, but I couldn’t remember a thing from it. For example I didn’t realise it was in colour.
The film isn’t the best overall (some clunky dialogue and acting), and is less polished than Jarmusch’s next films, but it has some standout moments. The scene in the cinema foyer could easily fit in to any Jarmusch film, and it’s great for that. As well as the scene with the sax player on the street.
The start is a bit disorienting with the dialogue regarding a war with China, and the loud war sound effects which suggest the film is set in some strange post apocalyptic era, or that we are experiencing the protagonists daydreams. This is all dropped in the later half, though the loud ambient noise soundtrack remains at times. It seems strange, but if you get through it there’s a lot to enjoy from this early Jarmusch.
