  Niki and Vika balance on the subway tracks and look for a new exciting place to play every day. Since the bombing of Kharkiv, their families, like many people, have sought shelter in the tunnels of the subway. The stations are littered with bed camps, and people have to get along with each other in the smallest of spaces.
  They live there like vampires under the neon lights. Daylight is synonymous with danger from falling bombs. Doctors diagnose the children with a strong sensitivity to light - photophobia. The large steel gates are only opened again after dark.

  In extreme conditions, a non-place may become a place, and this is exactly what this film is documenting. A group of Ukranians are forced to live in a subway station due to the harsh conditions of the war. The film is told from the pov of Nikita, a young boy of 12, whose body lacks vitamin D since he hasn't been in the sun for a long time. Every moment reminds us why these people were brought together, and it is heartbreaking.

  With shades of Nomadland and Bloody Noses and Empty Pockets, this blurs the line between documentary and drama. It succeeds based on its similar willingness to eschew formal plot and really lean into that blend of forms, making it hard for the audience to tell the difference between what's scripted and what's not.

  This genre is based on evoking a slice-of-life realism within surreal Kafkaesque traps, be it alcoholism, nomadism or war. That juxtaposition of realism and surrealism is central to the existence these people and the framing of the assumed privilege of the audience. We are an outsider looking into a bizarre existence, at once acknowledging the absurdity of their circumstance and the mundane reality that they are trapped…

  “Get up, the war has started.”

  Photophobia is the International Feature submission for Slovakia. The film takes place in Kharkiv, in February, as the Russian forces begin their attack in Ukraine. Twelve year old Nikita, along with his parents and sister, take shelter in the metro station to protect themselves from the raging war outside. The booming explosions are constant. The airstrikes are beginning to happen and the shelling is non-stop. Along with this family of four, there are more than 1,500 other people underground with them. Women, men, the elderly, the young, even cats and dogs, have all made this place their home.

  Wie verhalten sich Menschen, die aufgrund von Krieg in U-Bahn-Tunneln leben müssen?

  Diese Frage fängt der Film ein und porträtiert dabei sowohl tieftraurige als auch einigermaßen schrullige Schicksale, die alle in dem Wunsch vereint sind, irgendwann wieder an die Oberfläche zu kommen.

  This defo could’ve been cut down in length, or alternatively been more well developed plot wise in order to fill the 80 minutes - but I really liked the way that this was shot and the perspective that it took. Slice of life for the win once more <3

  Quando a cena mais emocional do filme ocorre que é ver uma mulher ser entrevistada aos prantos e devastada porque a vida dela estava perfeita (tinha casa, trabalho, tudo no seu devido lugar) antes do bombardeio e agora ela não tem mais nada e em seguida é cortada para outra entrevistada sendo totalmente fria e nada empática com a situação da outra mulher resume o que é esse filme. Um verdadeiro furacão escolhas ruins de montagem e de escolha péssimas de material. Caralho, era um tema muito simples para causar qualquer comoção no expectador e a busca parece sempre ser a inversa. Se eu escutasse o barulho daquelas orelhas de brinquedo mais uma vez, eu acho que ia começar a gritar, chorar e correr pela minha casa! O que era pra ser sobre angústia, desemparo e dor foram setenta minutos imensamente dolorosos.
