  Gerard Butler proves he can do Sully AND Captain Phillips in one movie

  This one got off to a rocky start because I lost my license and was refused a Bud Light at the theater, which I think would have made this HGH-B-movie go down a little better. Gerard Butler plays Captain Brodie Torrance (some other Butler character names include Mike Banning, Big Nick O'Brien, Dane Jensen, and Bob Viddick), an ex-RAF pilot, down on his luck and working New Year's Eve on a cheapo airline because he choke slammed a drunk air rager. His plane goes down east of Manilla in a ... land of wolves? On paper, combining Flight with The Raid should be right in my wheelhouse, but to borrow a line from Hurlyburly, "THEY'RE TOTALLY FUCKING DIFFERENT!" Doesn't help that this looks like it was shot on an iPhone.

  As sturdy, weathered, and no-frills as the Reagan-era passenger jet that lends this January-ass film its poetically blunt title, Jean-François Richet’s “Plane” becomes the most airworthy Gerard Butler vehicle this side of “Greenland” by answering a question that Clint Eastwood didn’t even have the courage to ask: What if, instead of ditching US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River like a total loser, Capt. Sully Sullenberger had been man enough to land that baby in the middle of a steroidal ’80s action movie? You know the kind! The sort where vaguely racist man-vs.-army spectacle that finds a couple of jacked-up English-speaking everymen forced to kill their way out of a sweltering foreign jungle full of indigenous militants, and climaxes…

  Pretty lean, solid and violent entry in the generic, mid-budget January programmer that feels both lost out of time from an era when directors had names like Renny Harlin but also like a low-rent DTV B-movie that escaped onto the big screen. You've got two movies in one: the god Gerry B, a gruff, weary pilot named captain Sully Diehard forced to make a New Year's Eve crash-landing on an island due to Big Plane forcing him to fly through a dangerous storm, but instead of switching gears into the typical survival movie it turns out the island is swarming with militias who want to hunt down his passengers, take them hostage and execute them.   Gerard Butler returns to his role as an action hero thrust into plausible but ultimately ludicrous predicaments. And this time, Luke Cage himself, Mike Colter, joins him.

  And if there's one thing the picture can't be faulted for, it's being plain (hah!). It's not exactly original or exhilarating either, but the few people on my screen laugh and say "heck yeah" when they see Mike crushing heads with a hammer. Both actors do a fine job despite the limited material given to them; unfortunately, neither of their characters benefits from anything beyond a couple of murky backgrounds that ultimately don't amount to much.
