This is fucking genius satire that mocks the entire concept of unnecessarily gritty reboots in only 14 minutes, and sadly no one got that. And like everything Joseph Khan does, no one got that.
It’s not like he tried to hide his intentions. There’s a reason why the “hip hop kido” stuff is in there. There’s a reason why all the people playing the white guys are particularly the same bland, glowering, stubble chinned grimacing dude. There’s a reason why Rita Repulsive looks exactly like her counterpart in the original series.
In fact, the reveal of Rita in all her out of place campy glory is supposed to be the punchline, letting the audience know “yes, this whole thing is ridiculous, that’s the point”.
If you watched this originally in 2015 and wrote it off as just being another needlessly gritty “reimagining” of a children’s property, watch it again. This film hates those reboots as much as you.
