Essentially a filmed Wikipedia page - for real at one point they LITERALLY film the Wikipedia page! Less development BTS and more meandering & back-patting than I was hoping.
That said, still charming/nostalgic enough that I just preordered the THPS remaster 🛹
PS didn’t effect star rating but fuck the THUG badmouthing it’s the best one dont @ me
EDIT: just got the remaster of THPS 1+2, it’s fantastic. Would love to see a real documentary about how these games were made some day, wouldn’t that be neat?
Who hasn't played some Tony Hawk right? It takes me back to playing Tony Hawk 2 when I was younger. It was nothing but quality times and though I haven't stuck with the serious at all, I have nothing but love and respect for the memories. It was interesting to see how the game came to be and the real impact it had when it came out. I enjoyed this a lot and I think that any fan of the games can find a level of entertainment value here. I have to get that remaster already. I'm slacking.
Finally a documentary about the only thing I’ve cared about since 1999.
This was a fun watch! It reminded me that the games fucking ruled, consumed the entire world and brought back basically every single memory I have of being 10.
Tony Hawk fucking rules. What a mad dog. The 900 is the only sporting achievement that impresses me.
Oh yes the glory days of playing Tony Pro Skater on PS1....classic. I'm glad we got a documentary about the games because they were a huge part of my childhood. To this day, people talk about the first 2 games and how they found the bands because of the soundtrack. Unfortunately, this documentary should have been a bit longer. We do get a history of Tony Hawk and the evolution of skateboarding including interviews from other famous skaters.
The problem comes in when they start talking about the games themselves. The first game gets more of the backstory and behind the scenes stuff which makes sense cause its the game that changed everything and I'm glad they talked about the…
Can't believe any of you are giving positive ratings to a documentary that includes a shot of a Wikipedia page in order to convey information to the audience. The only reason this is getting a score as high as two stars is due to my dirty love for skateboarding, Tony Hawk and all (most) of his video games. For real, I probably have more hours in THPS 4 and THUG 2 than any other game out there. While I could've easily read about all of the information they got for this documentary online (it's probably all on that one Wikipedia page) I also could've easily watched another hour of this which is what it desperately needed. At the very least,…
It’s unfortunate how much I disliked this doc.
Being a huge fan of this video game series, I Was stoked to nerd out on things like the levels of the games, the iconic music from the games, and maybe learn more about some of my favorite skaters from the games like Chad Muska, and Bucky Lasek.
What I got instead was a 1 hour puff piece that spent half of its runtime explaining the origins of skating, and not nearly enough content about the games. The editing of this is so whack.
There was maybe 5 interesting minutes about the origin of neversoft...the game developing company that made tony hawk pro skater that I really liked. They rushed through all…
There’s a doc where everyone can be happy... it’s the most beautiful thing in the whole fucking world.
As somebody who grew up playing these games I have to say this documentary is really disappointing and a missed opportunity. The production quality is basically something you'd see on youtube, I wasn't expecting the quality being Werner Herzog tier because in the end it's a video game documentary but still I was hoping for something much better and not this rushed. The documentary is only 70 minutes long and like the first 20 minutes are spent on explaining the history of skateboarding which I get is important for context but it didn't need to take that much of the runtime and the documentary really should have been at least 90 minutes long. There's also not nearly enough interviews with…
A legitimately very interesting documentary about the infamous Pro Skater series and its legacy. I thought the interviews conducted with skateboarders and actually developers of the games was a nice balance and very honest.
I was also pretty surprised there was some upfront honesty about some of the later games sucking. Pro Skater 5 itself isn't addressed but having the creatives involved in the series admit it was burning out or some non TPS entries just being bad was pretty refreshing to hear.
Also getting to hear about the skateboarding scene at the time of the first game's creation and the pop culture boom it made was fascinating. Given how I was born a few months after this boom my only major exposure to these games was TPS2.
Activision.
Neversoft.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater.
The 900.
Superman by Goldfinger.
The Birdman.
Legend.
The Rest Is History.
Ojala hubiese sido un poco mas largo, siento que quedo algo incompleto, pero igual la nostalgia es absoluta.
If we could all just try to be more like Rodney Mullen everything would be ok.
As a big fan of the games, this was a lot of fun. It focuses on the first one for the most part and then races through the rest of the franchise, but it’s still really cool.
A wholesome documentary about the impact of a video-game that doesn't really go into what made said game so good. While this prevents it from getting bogged down in nerdy technical jargon, it also makes the film's narrative feel very shallow. Like it's missing ~30 minutes of interview footage detailing how the design and game feel made THPS 1-4 some of the best games ever. Instead it's more focused on the games' impact on skate culture, to likely help make it as accessible as possible. Treating the quality of these games as if they were inevitable like the tide.
I love playing these games. I just wish the doc had been a bit longer. While I know financially they didn’t sell as well I love the Underground games and would have loved more time on the games past the first one. The others were just mentioned like oh yeah the series continued.
Short version: the video game was very popular and changed the world's understanding of how tite a Double Front Foot Impossible is.
Honestly pretty disappointed in how this documentary about the Tony Hawk video games spends astonishingly little time talking about the games. There’s a decent, if loosely structured, amount of time given for the original, but all subsequent games are just breezes through. They honestly spend way more time in this film discussing the origins of skateboarding culturally than they do the actual subject they’re making a documentary about. It would have been nice too if they analyzed this as more than just pro skaters’ perspectives on the game, and brought in either more people who worked on the games themselves or everyday people influenced by the games. Still, despite being incredibly loose and not super compelling, this is nonetheless a really pleasant and digestible way to wind down for the night.
Basically just a vibe check that ignores how bad the later games were BUT those fucking 1-4 vibes are insane, so no shame in checking back to a better time.
I loved the games, I love the docu
+ It brings back the vibes of the games, supported by the legendary soundtrack
- more talking heads then actual footage
tony hawk is so cool. he looks like what the halfway point between bill gates and mark zuckerberg would be. keep calm and skate on!
