It's such a shame that Prey went straight to streaming, because it's a real fucking movie that deserves the theatrical experience. Watching it with the Comanche dub is such a thrill. This is far from the unsettling sensations of the original work and John McTiernan's classic flourish, but director Dan Trachtenberg is eager to show off with a grab-bag of modern visual ideas and sturdy action choreography, and it aligns perfectly with the survivalist sensibility of the first film. It's packed with atmospheric images of woodland landscapes, and the score and sound design both contribute to the immersion. Amber Midthunder as Naru carries the movie with an often wordless lead performance. Her expressions and swift actions define the pacing and rhythms of the film, all the way up to a killer third act showdown. So gnarly and brutal. It's great to see the Predator back in a major way.
Turns out “what if you tied a rope to a hatchet” is the great action movie innovation of 2022
Cleans the franchise up after the over busy clunkiness of Shane Black’s entry by reducing the logline (and, in turn, the iconic alien beast) to its pro wrestler essence. “Predator vs. Commando” transformed into “Predator vs. Lethal Weapon” before “Predator Battle Royale”. Now, it’s “Predator vs. Native Warrior”, stripping all pretension away and barely leaving room for anything beyond one properly choreographed and thrillingly gnarly set piece after another, arrows and tomahawks flying and drawing green blood as the ultimate hunter takes his own scalps. There’s a theory that you can use these movies to take the pulse of where action filmmaking currently sits since ‘87, and this one feels fit for the post JOHN WICK era: precise, well photographed chaos that’s more than a little show-offy. What a pleasant surprise.
Good! I would've preferred a lot less handheld in the action but it's still suitably gnarly. Great movie dog!
A Predator killing tons of screaming French dudes is a wonderful time at the movies. Great big screen crowd movie. Sigh.
