A breathtakingly, visceral and brutal exercise in visual storytelling by one of the world's greatest animators and filmmakers, Genndy Tartakovsky.
Although I'm aware of Samurai Jack's existence and have seen the occasional clip, this is the first time I've seen anything more mature and violent from Tatakovsky, and needless to say, I'm looking forward to seeing more. The very specific style that exhibits the supremacy of 2D animation on many levels that must be seen to be appreciated, fits very well with the violence, giving it a very appealing aesthetic that feels familiar, but also rather unique. It also goes very well with the story itself, which is a very realistic and, I think, accurate depiction of the harsh and…
The most badass and epic 440(?) minutes of almost dialogueless dinosaur action I've ever witnessed.

Hunted or be hunted. A gaze into the primitive stages of man, realized in a style so visceral and rough as though the makers were recreating cave paintings; and as often as those ancient drawings reflect the harsh conditions of their aritsts, Tartakovsky's animated series embraces the ruthlessness of its environmental components and goes, in all seriousness, completely batshit.
I have always held a puerile obsession with prehistoric creatures; I used to sketch dinosaurs a lot - perhaps to be able to make them seem less intangible - and evinced my indelible admiration for these giant lizards by frequently visiting the natural history museum. Naturally, I incidentally collected figures and all dinosaur related products.
Unfortunately as we all know, history…
I do not usually watch animated stuff. Just never have, until this show began playing on auto play. Accompanied by the fact that I am also dealing with being sick, I was too comfortable to change the show.
The part that hooked me in was the story of the main character losing his significant other and his children. That hit me at home due to the consequence of losing my wife and son back in February. The relatability of the main character going berserk when hitting rock bottom mixed with the rage that comes with losing the most valuable purpose for life is displayed well here. The experience when life takes something precious away from you that you no longer…
So up my alley I spent most of the runtime clenching my fists, muttering in quiet rage, “Damn it, why didn’t I think of this.”
This show is the most anti-vegan tingz I've ever seen lmao
Poor mammothea... He looked exhausted asf and beat up from any quarter already. He really went off to the wrong neighborhood 🦣
"Roar" -Krog and Spear,
Simply put, this is one of the best things that I have ever seen and I sincerely recommend that you watch it. Primal is emotional and exciting and the animation is great. It explores humanity in ways that many projects fail to do and by the end I was spiritually drained. Also, it's got some great gore in it and I'm a sucker for that.
Yes... and soon.
Review: Primal
Wow this series hurts so much. Wow- it’s just Earth shattering.
I really like how adult animation has been treated in the last few years. I’d like to thank shows like Bojack Horseman for showing adult animation doesn’t always have to be comedic or schlocky but can also prove to be meaningful and a reflection of ourselves along the way.
Gendy Tartavosky is done with Hotel Transylvania garbage and is now making real genuine artful cartoons again and I just love it. I started to get into Samurai Jack recently and I’ve realized just what a brilliant cartoon that was and why Tartavosky is so beloved in the animation world. I have yet to finish that series but…
Every movie is about humans. Even movies that aren’t about humans are about humans.
This series is like a pendulum. Moments of tranquility are interrupted by rabid chaos. Brutal violence is followed by a deep appreciation of life. The hardest struggles are punctuated by the greatest triumphs. Deep fear evokes moments of overwhelming love.
This show is all about love as the most powerful thing in the universe. It can move mountains and destroy armies and defy physics. It can cause the deepest pains and then help heal those same wounds. There are no boundaries as to what it can accomplish.
This is everything.
