This is to Kill la Kill what Planet of the Vampires is to Alien; Hiroyuki Imaishi obviously imprinted on this as a young animator. A wonderful, breezy blast of irreverent pop.

Schoolgirls duke it out on the 6 year anniversary of a newly constructed Earth for... does it really matter? Mechs, space battles, a seizure inducing movie theater slasher scene staring the KFC colonel, Dragon ball Z scale battles with robot spiders, and tanks.... Every 80’s anime box is checked more than once... it even makes its own boxes and has a thicc muscle bro school girl check them. This is a sugary self aware fun from the golden age of anime. They don’t make em like this anymore.

here it is...the most anime anime there is. lesbian schoolgirls. super-powered schoolgirls. schoolgirls in mecha suits. lots of yelling. a space prince. panty shots. aliens. schoolgirl running with toast in mouth. Macross jokes. Gundam jokes. simply put - it's art!!!!!!

i've put this off for a very long time because its label as a "classic" always intimidated me, but i must say, this holds up. something about watching it made feel all warm and fuzzy inside, too, because i just kept imagining some kid in the 80's or 90's finding this at a video store and it being their very first anime. <3

This has nothing to do with its namesake, Project A, and that's fine because it instead has everything to do with Kill La Kill - just with more clothing, more retro character designs, and more Fist of the North Star. Killer soundtrack, definitely some stolen Star Wars graphics, and Nejire Hado seems to have inherited B-ko's hair (and C-ko's disposition).

Thrilling. Engaging. High-spirited. Hip. Fun. Awesome.

A royal anime treat...

One of those movies that's so inherently absurd you have no recourse but to just sit there eating popcorn and going "aiight" every time someone flies into the air and kicks something until it blows up

Anyway, I think this is 80's Kill La Kill, but I've never seen Kill la Kill and I wasn't around for the 80's so

MAN, this was so much better on rewatch than it was the first time! It’s not super “haha” funny throughout like I was expecting the first time, but it IS delightfully goofy throughout, which is extremely enjoyable! The animation and plain ol’ drawing quality are totally top-notch throughout, so this’ll really whet yer sense of a e s t h e t i c as well! This rewatch definitely put “Project A-ko” from a middling 6 to a light 8 outta 10!

80s anime really had absolutely zero fucks to give.

This movies 86 minute run time contains the following:
-muscular school girls voiced by men
- lesbian school girl rivalry
-tasteful nudity
-robots
-extended fight scenes
-a schoolgirl causing massive property damage
- an exoskeleton battlesuit that covers less than a one piece bathing suit
-an alcoholic alien space Captain
- a race of aliens that are all women with Butch haircuts
-jumping from missile to missile
- schoolgirls throwing tanks at each other
- a teacher hitting a student
- a pink Helicopter powered by a human pedaling
- swords at one point
-people fucking dying
-an intense game of rock paper scissors
- a banging 80s synth pop soundtrack

And that just scratches the surface

Too much chibi and annoying supporting character (C-Ko) for my tastes, but the ending was pretty fun.

Fun, bonkers, self-referential anime ... from the 80's. Starts slow, but then goes wild 20 minutes in. Lovely animation from the anime's 80's golden age.

so many questions raised. is this movie part of the queer canon? should i stan b-ko, our problematic queen? does c-ko have a brain injury? why does every song in this movie sound like The Prerenders? were the aliens trans? this movie must have made a lot of people horny.

Much better than I remembered. It is a hilarious anime parody that goes to some pretty weird places.

Entertaining. Definitely has the 80's vibe to it. Very sensual.

If you've never watched this movie, the story is ridiculous, but the animation is lovely. The soundtrack is pretty good, and you'll fall for C-ko. Whom all are fighting for.

It's not often you see a movie where Colonel Sanders is a slasher movie villain. And that's like the 10th most interesting thing about it.

How is C-Ko supposed to pay any attention when Miss Ayumi is literally reading nonsense about a purple backed black piping shrike, is the red idol supposed to be A-Ko? is A-Ko a god?

I firmly believe this is the pinnacle of queer cinema.
