Ofiary proroka, Prophets Prey
Someone recommended this documentary to me after I watched the Netflix documentary Sweet Pray and Obey, saying it provided additional background information. After seeing it, I'd argue that rather than elaborating, this documentary acts as a companion piece. While the Netflix version looks at the case from within, this one examines it from the perspective of those who want to depose this man from without. The hunt for Jeffs, for instance, is given more attention in the Netflix documentary series, while it is merely mentioned briefly here as an aside. The brief explanation of Mormon history, including Smith's untimely demise, was another highlight.
All in all, again, a really good companion documentary for anyone interested in the case.

This seems to be a common thing to do with a documentary nowadays. Find a creepy, cult-like religion. Dig up all the dirt you can find, much of which is already available online. Put it together in a neat little package and capture people's innate desire to watch horrible things happening to other people.
Prophet's Prey is just the next logical step in this creepy religion documentary genre. As far as I know, no one has really touched upon the FLDS church, a group of people known for their insistence on continuing their practice of polygamy. It's a church that definitely deserves a deep examination. Warren Jeffs has somewhat recently come to power in the church and has brought the…
Average American: "I'm deeply afraid of Sharia Law coming to America."
Me: "uh huh huh huh ho uhm uh..."
This was the first movie I worked on that I cared about. Spending time in The Crick has burned images in my brain.
I’m glad this movie was made. Thank you Amy and the rest for going on this journey. Thank you for taking me.
Warning - this film is about a "religious" sect called FLDS based out in Utah. They are known because their leader and prophet Warren Jeffs, was incarcerated for "marrying" and "consummating" with young girls well under the age of 18. This isn't for everyone. so turn away if it isn't for you.
This film explores that story and shows background of this horrible cult and how Jeffs (and his family) came into power and what the group looks like now.
There are audio tapes of him actually recording the wedding and consummating with these girls - gross.
its worth a watch if you find it streaming and are into cults/backwards religions.
*****
It’s monsters like Warren Jeffs (abusive cult leaders) that make my skin crawl. There were quite a few moments throughout that I couldn’t breathe because of how angry I was getting.
Very disturbing documentary about the FLDS cult and its leader, Warren Jeffs. Takes its time telling an important but little-known story. Beautiful cinematography, with breathtaking shots of the Utah landscapes. Recommended.
Infuriating documentary about the FLDS and it’s leader Warren Jeffs. I recently read Breaking Free by one of his 58 daughters, Rachel Jeffs, and a work friend who studies religion and cults told me to watch this. It was a tough watch, much like the book was a hard read, but it is an important and essential movie. I highly recommended for people interested in cults. More horrifying than any horror movie.
Highly recommend this excellent doc on Warren Jeffs and the fLDS cult. Featuring Jon Krakauer and music/narration by Nick Cave, it's essential viewing to those who liked Going Clear earlier this year. And like Scientology, this wasn't some cult from back in the day, this was/is going on in the 21st century.
Warren Jeff Mormon cult was a weird one. The way he took over a town was fascinating. This is a horror movie waiting to be written about this true story.
Warren Jeffs' creepy, haunting voice will make you want to bathe your soul in bleach.
Overall, I thought this documentary was a bit dry. I would imagine it's probably a more interesting watch if you aren't familiar with Jeffs and the FLDS Church (/Cult).
