(Actually reviewing The Evil Clergyman, like everyone else.)
While it's obviously fascinating and cool that a VHS copy of this lost short was found and distributed after all these years, it's difficult not to be a little disappointed. Seeing Combs and Crampton do Lovecraft is always a good time, but this one was kind of oddly pretentious and strange for a Band production. Like they actually tried to do Lovecraft without turning it into a cheesy gorefest, but while also including a goofy mutant rat character that talks.
It doesn't help that the sights and sounds are muddled by the VHS transfer. Still, as a half hour experimental project, it's definitely worth the little amount of time it takes to see the old gang make a (slightly) more serious attempt at capturing the spirit of HPL's writing even if the end result isn't exactly amazing.
