Before its time, Punisher: War Zone plays like a smashed neon cathedral, like a post-traumatic 21st Century retelling of Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy movie. Alive and splendorified in garishness and cartoon bloodshed, this is the Punisher I crave, not gritty and earthbound, but catastrophically insane, having abandoned reason and logic for a Gothic Horrorshow. My favorite part of this movie is when the Punisher goes to make coffee in his sort of basic overcluttered lair, but is too upset to make coffee. I know what that is like.
Screw the cynics.
Punisher: War Zone is quite possibly the greatest comic book adaptation we have gotten so far.
Roger Ebert said that Punisher War Zone looked great, sounded great and was paced amazingly. But he said its only flaw was that it was disgusting. If that's a flaw, I will accept that in stride. While adhering more closely to the comics and objectively better than 2003 Punisher (WTF were they thinking?) War Zone is still nothing to write home about.
The best part of the movie is Stevenson's PTSD suffering, world-weary, Punisher. The casting was perfect, he looks like he stepped straight out of the comics. After a solid opening War Zone starts to go downhill and doesn't right itself until the last act. (Even then….)
It can't figure out if it wants to be a gritty more realistic crime movie or an over-the-top comic book movie, and the two blend together in this like oil and water.

Ray Stevenson’s the best movie Punisher. You really sense that he loathes himself almost as much as the Mafia, and he looks like he stepped out of a Tim Bradstreet cover. Besides him, though, I’m never quite gotten the love this one gets. It’s always struck me as the movie version of a fill-in issue — the extremely generic and forgettable comics that would come out between more consequential stories to keep a series on schedule.
