"To the African Americans... what the hell do you have to lose?"
Astute political observers will recognize those words as then-candidate Donald Trump. I thought it was a good framing device for this documentary about a black family in Philly (my birthplace) that shows their life from 2012 to 2016.
Teenage sexuality. A random shooting victim. Business troubles. Brain cancer. Gang activity.
But it's not all challenges, as many gentle moments are shown, and loving commentary on the gifts of family, neighborhood, and music.
A nice piece of filmmaking, but I am a little surprised by its acclaim. If you loved this, there's a doc this good on like every week on PBS.
