If anyone is actually searching for a nostalgic, family throwback to the seventies' Disney flick of the same name, then they'll find this film sorely unhelpful and lacking in anything worthwhile, considering this remake is completely different from the many that came before it. However, Race to Witch Mountain features the ever reliable faces of Dwayne Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb and Carla Gugino (Cato also makes an appearance) who perform their one-dimensional roles as well as they could with the limited material on offer, some fun moments, and as little realism as possible. For a family looking for genial family fun, this is completely serviceable (a decidedly average affair, sure, and lacking in characterization, depth and intelligence). Just sit back and enjoy the ride, ya loser. Also, it went by, like, super fast.
This is a family film so clearly it’s not going to be mad good, but for what it is I really enjoyed it. AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig are great and the Rock is the Rock.
The film is a lot of fun but that’s about it (also it has a weak first act).
Who knew Ludwig would be playing the beast Bjorn Ironside just years later...
WE DON'T THINK IT IS OUR SPACESHIP. WE KNOW IT IS OUR SPACESHIP.
-Annie loves allllllllll kids
The Rock stars an ex-con taxi driver, trying to go straight, who gets mixed up with runaway kids, intergalactic assassins and the government's own Men in Black. It jumps right into the action and never really lets up, resulting in an entertaining Sci-Fi/Action Chase movie for kids.
Race to Witch Mountain is described as a continuation of the 1975 original 'Escape to Witch Mountain'. I watched Escape a few months back and although I got a bit more out of Race because of that, it works fine as a stand alone watch. I would suggest a double-bill of Escape and Race. However, if you really want to go for it, there is the 1978 sequel 'Return from Witch Mountain', 1982's 60-minute television sequel 'Beyond Witch Mountain', and even a 1995 remake of 'Escape to Witch Mountain'.
As always the ever reliable Johnson can make just about anything watchable and he's his usual charming self trying his best to carry very basic fare and making it seem a lot better than it is. The films biggest crime is that even with the benefits that its lead gives it it is still at times too dull especially when the end goal is as predicatble as you would expect. Has its moments and the kids aren't as bad as you would fear, gugino's solid but sadly even with hinds the villains are too bland. Not the worst kids film Johnson's done but not really good enough to warrant any future viewings
If I saw this when I was 10 it would have been my jaaaam.
It's also weird to see The Rock when he was Little Rock (still big to normal people), before he got mad at not fulfilling his dream of leaving WWE to become an action movie star and decided to grow a foot and put on 100 more pounds of muscle. He literally worked out so hard he went bald. Like Saitama the One Punch Man.
This review went places, eh?
I went to the theater with some friends to see Watchmen but the dude wouldn't sell us tickets. We were 16 at the time. We made the most of it. We layed down in the front row and riffed it amongst ourselves (at a respectful volume so as not to disturb the old couple sitting towards the back of the theater).
