Reason for pick - director of Bullhead
First act, Gigi, - meh
Second act, Bibi, - hated
Third act, no flowers, despised
Final scene - WTF?!!
A film which includes gangsters, a miserable romance, car chases, jailbreaks and armed robberies should never be this dull.
The kind of film that really makes me say "What a shame". It could have been so good, had they not decided to go with the easy and cliché direction. And the clichés on this film are so cliché that I can't even find a metaphor for them (a cliché in itself).
But that first part... well, it sure was going to be something special. The film had the feeling of Michael Mann's "Heat". Imagine the character Neil McCauley but instead of the heists being the focus and his relationship something minor in the whole scheme of the film (albeit it is a major part, that is true) is what is at stake. Although the relationship is sometimes too much,…
What a disappointment. The first half truly hums, playing like a slightly underdeveloped yet still gorgeous and moving French companion piece to HEAT. Then the movie makes one boneheaded narrative decision and you feel the control quickly slip out of Roskam’s grip, to the point that you barely care by the time the picture’s overwrought, weepy finale rolls around. Haven’t experienced a filmic unraveling this absolute in quite a while, and it’s truly one of the shittiest feelings. Everyone involved deserves a do over for the back half.
"Nee, juffrouw. Het is gewoon... Tjah, een verschrikkelijke film.…
I like both leads a lot, but I am not fond of this director. Nothing resonated with me as truth and I was not buying the love story. I was glad to get it out of the way for Awards season. Better luck next time, Belgium.
The first half is very good, with neo-noir atmosphere, two heists (one done with an impressive long take), violence and sex; the writing itself is good and the actors deliver solid performances. In the second half, it all goes downhill, with absurd moments and cliched dialogue, slowing down too much and boring me to tears.
Had no idea what kind of film it wanted to be. Could've been 3 different movies. The two leads put in great performances but it's not enough to save this disappointment.
First 30 mins i was really into . Hot young racing car driver ( Adele ) meets hot bank robber who hides who he is by saying he is someone else and they start a raunchy relationship.
It all goes downhill after that with a series of terrible choices that by the end i didn't really care how it ended.
There was a really fun movie here but i can't believe someone read this script and said yep lets make this .
One for the Adele completionists only.
First act - It didn't involve me much, I felt almost devoid of emotions. I was watching more just for watching. I was not feeling the chemistry of the couple, having found it even forced.
Second act - Finally the film was going in the right direction and I was starting to get involved with the film and the chemistry of the actors, although there I noticed an unhealthy dependence of Bibi in relation to Gigi.
Third act - That's where they ruined the film. They changed their course along the excessively melodramatic path and I just didn't stop it precisely because it was the last act and there was not much left to finish.
In short, unnecessarily long, with potential to lose. The performances of the main actors are worth.
Look. If I was dating Matthias Schoenaerts and he told me he was a gangster, I’d probably stick around too.
