With Amadeus and Cuckoo's Nest taking two of my top five spots, I thought I should check out more of Miloš Forman's work. Ragtime has all the same high quality attention to detail and the best is brought out of every actor.
There was probably too much story here to fit into 2 1/2 hours. If it was done today, it would come out as a 10 part series. So much is going on, and the cuts are abrupt. Time jumps have you catching up to what might have happened between scenes. Then by the end, everything is focused on one story which makes you wonder why the whole movie didn't just follow that from the beginning.
It's good. It's worth a watch. It shows a section of US history that deserves some attention. The recreation is done with care, and that's a valuable enough reason to spend your tine with Ragtime.
