2006 ‘रंग दे बसंती’ Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
After a group of friends graduate from Delhi University, they listlessly haunt their old campus, until a British filmmaker casts them in a film she's making about freedom fighters under British rule. Although the group is largely apolitical, the tragic death of a friend owing to local government corruption awakens their patriotism. Inspired by the freedom fighters they represent in the film, the friends collectively decide to avenge the killing.

A CULT CLASSIC. Despite of all the melodrama and flaws, it still remains memorable for its daring subject, revolutionary ideology, youthful rebel energy, thought provoking dialogues, ensemble cast and scintillating music. It makes strong socio political statements with an interesting historical connect and perfectly reflects the current generation mindset, cultural impacts, existential dilemmas, political corruption and state affairs. The social awakening portion is incorporated into the narrative in a seamless and emotionally effective manner. Highly recommended watch.

There's a way Bollywood films likes to switch the tone, but this one really switched from a light hearted comedy to Dark drama which the country has been going through for past decades.
Man, that defiant third act really resonates today, even if it gets a little overzealous with its violence. I think Slumdog Millionaire has a big debt to this film in terms of how Boyle apes its style. After familiarizing myself with true Bollywood, I'm really in the mood to give Slumdog another go.

All it’s dizzying Dutch angles and early 2000s aesthetics only add to the sheer uniqueness which makes Rang De Basanti play like one of the most effective fusions of Indian political history and Bollywood sensibilities. Bravo 👏
Oh! boy...amount of reflectivity this movie holds in itself that's mountain-sized BIG...and even it's not my first-time, watching this career defining masterpiece from Omprakash-ji; still (Man!) it hits like a bullet, running straight-on deep in heart.
Well watching RANG DE BASANTI always is felt like experiencing an Indianized version of LA HAINE with desi-Panjabi masala added to the drama but with AR Rahman's beating melodies against chaos impending brilliant cinematography by Binod Pradhan, occassionally tinged with blending hues of sepia and grey along with brilliant whip pans that allows two separate timelines to coexist in this Delhi-based setting..there RDB has really transcended itself to something a LOT higher, something a LOT bigger and unparalleled!
Here again I cry and sob…
The messages were really strong and so was the story and Aamir Khan was excellent but sometimes the melodrama was a bit cheesy and got in the way.
