I’ve been a fan of Red Dwarf for most of my life, and I’ve enjoyed pretty much every incarnation of the show. I even got to watch Skipper from series 12 in a cinema in London with the creator and some of the cast members a couple of years back... So what I’m saying is, I can’t be objective about this in the slightest (not that any review is objective, but you know what I mean.)
Overall, this was a lot of fun, and better than many of the modern entries to the show. It was funny, used the added runtime to great benefit and even had some surprisingly heartfelt moments.

I... I honestly didn't know this show could do that. As a feature-length anniversary special, it has no business being longer than, say, The Day Of The Doctor, but it's back to basics in ways that not even X, XI, and XII managed - gone are the reams of exposition and sub-Blackadder similes, in favour of a really funny, character-driven adventure.
Comfortably the best slice of Dwarf since Gunmen Of The Apocalypse, this also comprehensively proves that Galaxy Quest is a better parallel for feature-length Red Dwarf stories than Blade Runner was in Back To Earth. Who knew?
It was a little like dusting off an old jacket you loved in high school and trying it on again realizing it doesn't fit you anymore but you still enjoy the memories with it. There are some surprisingly good bits in here but it does lag a little long and some flat gags still it was nice to see the crew again. I miss my Red Dwarf KCTS pledge drive T-shirt that my mom bought me.
While fraught with all the executive shortcomings that have plagued the show since Back to Earth with a sort of self-parodic artificiality, this is easily the strongest of the new slate. I had no problem adjusting beyond these flaws given its admirable attention to substance. Unrushed and on point, manages to give each character their dramatic introspective due, finally even incorporating aspects of Last Human, the best of the original novels. As has always been the case with its obscurant cultishness, newcomers are unlikely to find an access point, and curmudgeonly oldskool haters of Series VII onwards will have their usual gripe. I found it surprisingly solid and laughed and cried a bunch.
Even though Red Dwarf has been on TV since 1988, I didn’t become a fan until 11 years later after Series VIII was broadcast in 1999. My first memory of the show was hearing my friends talking about the new Series VIII during break times at high school. My friend Sarah offered to loan me her Red Dwarf VHS tapes and I watched one a day until I was fully caught up.
I instantly became a fan! However, this was during the Red Dwarf Movie null, thinking I’d never see the boys from the Dwarf on TV again. It seemed like such a long slog. A very long slog!

I loved it so much that I teared up with joy on multiple occasions. Everything you could ever hope for as a Red Dwarf fan. If this indeed the end, it’s in the discussion as the best finale in the history of television.
Listen, I couldn’t really sit here and recommend this to you. I’ve loved Red Dwarf for basically my whole life. The recent few series on Dave have been alright, but they bring a warmth that can only come with a lifetime of investment.
Of course since the end of the 90’s it’s obvious that the main thing Doug Naylor ever wanted to do was make a movie. They basically only made series 7 and 8 to get the episode count up so worldwide syndication level to generate movie interest.

In times like these, we need a series like Red Dwarf, a show that is pure escapism. Yet this feature length special is more than just an excuse to not do another for a bit longer, the extended run time gives the characters room to breath and for the writer to show what has kept the series going for that long.
