A predecessor to the great Matewan and Blue Collar (and probably Norma Rae, which I can't believe I've never seen), Redes is filled with remarkable images, strong ideals and a great social message.
I loved how at the beginning, we see a struggling father crossing a river to the city to beg a Don for money to help his dying child. When he crosses the river again, in the final moments of the film, it really is a truly magnificent moment in cinema.
I also love the comparison of the fishermen to the fish they catch. Much like the other film I've seen in Criterion's World Cinema set, where our lead is compared to a bull, the analogy is perfect. This boxset is da bomb.
