A young woman must confront her physical and emotional boundaries as she enters the world of professional domination and submission.
As an art student goth in the 90s, I knew many women that used this form of expression for financial purposes. Though not really into S&M, I've always been fascinated by it.
And then totally by chance, my MFA thesis was about the subject. Again, not because of personal sexual preferences, but because of an old book I had owned, Psychopathia Sexualais by Richard von Krafft-Ebing. I was able to equate the digital experience with levels of control. Gilles Deluze Masochism: Coldness and Cruelty & Venus in Furs was a big influence here.
I gravitated to a case described in the book about whipping, that I was able to connect to how (at the time) we were tethered to our computers…
Because Cheyenne Picardo is the writer, editor, producer, director, and sings the songs, I assume this is a labor of love.
Despite my radical skimming, I discovered two excellent scenes. In the first (modeled on Hal Ashby's editing of The Thomas Crown Affair) we come to understand why S&M sessions are called "scenes." Role playing and negotiating with your play partner is actually of a form of acting. As in acting, a scene's success depends on creativity, commitment, connection, and responding in the moment to microshifts. You have to be as attuned as in a Meisner exercise to achieve a true communion that pleases both participants.
The scene immediately following repeats the previous scene but with a complete lack of…
Beautifully accentuating Davies’ performance is Picardo’s direction. The camera moves ever so softly through scenes, unobtrusively bringing the audience within this world. Through an exquisite mixture of close and medium shots, the emotionality is heightened to the point where occasionally you hope to escape.

pros:
-we clearly talked to sex workers before we made this movie
-if you want to watch some pretty realistic BDSM scenes play out at fair length, this movie is about half that
cons:
-despite the realism, we are so dedicated to telling a Romantic story, to the extent that numerous things don't make sense. to name an example, the dungeon where Remedy works doesn't appear to have a house safeword
-likewise, Remedy's character is weak in ways i dislike—especially in stories about sex workers
-Remedy isn't always great at her job and the second hand embarrassment is brutal
-much of the action in the film happens inside of Remedy, but Kira Davies's performance often fails to communicate Remedy's internal…
