Every time it leans into the campy action, it’s one of my favorite movies. Buckets of blood and Nic Cage hamming it up as Dracula? Its why we go to the movies.
But for some reason they continually try to make us care about this convoluted and melodramatic Awkwafina subplot— inadvertently crushing any of the momentum that existed.
More Dracula exploding people, less attempts at being The Departed.
Nicolas Cage didn't even know that he was filming, he’s just doing what he does every day
Renfield still has a better boss than me hahaha 😆
(Jeff if you’re reading this go fuck yourself you stupid piece of shit. You think it’s okay to bug my shit and hire a private investigator to follow me around?? Bro I’ve got so much dirt on you, you better fucking clench your balls and PRAY I don’t sue your ass for sexual harassment and work misconduct. You’ve stolen company funds, destroyed our offices in drunk/drug-induced rages, fucked employees during work hours, and cheated on your wife. You’re almost certainly the single most deplorable and insufferable human being I’ve ever had the displeasure of knowing, and I’m glad you’re going bankrupt. Fuck a cactus, you spineless sinful demon. People like you are why our world is as broken and filthy as it is.)
Also Nicolas Cage was funny
i genuinely have no clue who the intended audience of this movie is?? (still kinda campy fun though🤷♀️)
Renfield is the equivalent of eating 5 lbs of cotton candy. It’s fun and delicious while it’s happening but when it’s over you feel empty.
The violence and gore are over the top and satisfying for those who love it and while the comedy is there, it’s more miss than hit. This is the kind of role Nicolas Cage was made for and he goes ham here but not full ham, which is unfortunate. Awkwafina isn’t given enough comedic material to work with and her chemistry with Nicholas Hoult is basically zero.
The action sequences are done well and are exciting while they’re happening, but they are few and far between. The story is thin and flimsy at best, but the re-creation of the original Bela Lugosi Dracula scenes were a nice touch.
Renfield feels like it’s in search of more meat to sink it’s fangs into but instead of having a satisfying meal, it’s left feeling rather anemic.
