An incredibly messy British gangster film with a few stylistic flourishes, but way too much going on that never properly pays off. There's a trio of rappers that turn to crime, a woman out for revenge, and dirty cops on the case, but it's all presented in a haphazard manner that does none of the plot lines any favors. Writer/Director Julian Gibney's first film RECKONING DAY is an unheralded 16mm action epic in the vein of Peter Jackson's BAD TASTE, but this follow-up is hellbent on a 'serious' which doesn't really work. Gibney would get back to basics in the thrilling A LONELY PLACE TO DIE.
The back of the case claims the film is "The first real British 'black gangsta' movie. " Can it really be the first real one if it's written and directed by white guys?
Rollin' with the Nines is messy, without good enough character or plot development, has too much subpar acting, tries far too hard to be edgy and gritty, and it can't quite escape its budget.
However, there's talent here. Clearly. The makers have definitely got enough skill to craft, shape and film a watchable movie. Because this movie IS a passable British crime movie. Better than a lot of similar efforts.
There's some very ropey acting. That makes the good acting look even better than it is. A contrast that jolted me out of many scenes. There's also huge difference between actors talking tough because of the script and actors pulling off tough guy roles. That script is very weak too.…
