Summer Under The Stars: S.Z. Sakall
Directed by Michael Curtiz, Romance on the High Seas is a delightful musical that features Doris Day's film debut. Honestly, if I hadn't known before watching the film, I would have been surprised to find out it was her debut. She must've been a natural performer, because she's very at ease and charming in the film.
Besides the gorgeous, gaudy Technicolor, I appreciated the seamless transitions to the numbers. Unlike other musicals, they didn't come across as forced. No doubt, credit should be given to the director of these engaging numbers, Busby Berkeley.
I like how TCM gives the spotlight to character actors in their marathon, and S.Z. Sakall is no exception. He's quirky and maybe a little too campy at times, but I've never found him not to be a joy.
