  This is so fun! The sound is so weird, both the sound effects and the score (the first of many Silvestri/Zemeckis collabs! Apparently he hired Silvestri to do a temp score but really liked it. Okay, Rob!) but it's all just a blast. Has that weird sense of sexuality so many 80s movies did, where they just make characters horny in the hopes that we root for it but it just seems imposing and not suggestive. Beautiful lighting in those beautiful natural landscapes! Juuuust unnatural enough that it looks like they've got a glow, but not so unnatural that you go "where the hell is that sun coming from." Also has one of the best, most natural-looking split diopter shots…

  Damnit, I miss the eighties...

  First off, Indy ruined the adventure genre. Every film that has a roguish adventurer in it that travels to exotic locations is bound to be called an Indy rip-off at some point.

  This, however, has about as much to do with Indiana Jones as the fourth film of that installment. Absolutely nothing.

  What it does have is a trio of characters, portrayed by three artists that are obviously enjoying the hell out of what they are doing, galloping through a fantastic script helmed by a director who, when he is given the right materials, is one of the best of his generation.

  The premise is one of those perfect ideas for a mainstream movie. I’m not sure Zemeckis squeezes all the juice out of that premise, but he gets enough. This is the sort of sexy, entertaining fluff for adults that used to be Hollywood’s specialty and now seems forgotten. (Speaking of sexy, entertaining fluff: Michael Douglas’ hair in the mid-1980s was really quite spectacular.)

  The chemistry between Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner — such erotically charged actors — is five fucking stars. The film itself is sweaty fun and well made and replete with racial issues that are inherent to films such as this with white actors finding love and adventure against an “exotic” backdrop. Overall, I had a great time rewatching this.

  Action!: The Rise and Fall (?) Of Robert Zemeckis

  Coming from directing a wacky used car comedy, Robert Zemeckis more or less finds his footing with an incredible adventure film that could easily pass for an unofficial Indiana Jones sequel.

  As individual actors and as adventure men, Michael Douglas and Harrison Ford are as different as can be, so it's no surprise that their approaches to portraying sarcastic and resilient adventure men are so different, but they are both equally terrific. In some ways, his appeal in this film resembles Michael's father, with the occasional quality that reminds me of actors such as Errol Flynn and Humphrey Bogart.   Caught contentedly between The African Queen and Peter Pan, Romancing the Stone is less a Raiders of the Lost Ark clone and more a "what if Indiana Jones happened to you?" kind of adventure. It's all pulpy throwback, but Zemeckis keeps it lively and fun—the car chases, with their practical stunts and heavy synths, are incredible—and the cast is fantastic. Kathleen Turner's inherently Old Hollywood vibe makes her a perfect audience surrogate for this particular story, Danny DeVito is at his put-upon funniest, and Michael Douglas is in rare form, very clearly modeling his Jack Colton after the likes of Han Solo and Snake Plissken. He's always been a cool and compelling screen presence, but I can't think of any other role that allowed him to be such a lovable rogue.
