I’m not against straight people making movies about lesbians...but this is painful watch, and you can tell for the entirety of this runtime that this person has an uninteresting & uninspired lens of viewing gay women
i try to watch as much lgbtq+ movies as possible because i love them. i watched the first minute of this thing, then realized it was directed by a man. 'carol' is all right, but fuck, only women should be allowed to direct this type of films.
i'm not watching more lesbian movies directed by straight men, specially when the audience are mainly perverts with weird fetiches that only watch this for sexualizing lesbian relationships. i didn't finish this movie, and i'm not planning to.
p.s: don't search youtube recommendations about lgbtq+ movies (specially lesbian films) if the youtuber is a straight guy.
Oh man, this fucking movie. Buckle up 'cause this is going to be a long one.
So, the year is 2013, stupid horny teenager me is looking for lesbian films (cause apparently just porn didn't do it for me anymore) and Room In Rome kept showing up in recommendations, so I decided to watch it.
There I was, fully ready to... you know, but instead I got throughout the entire runtime without... you know, not only that, but I was kind of... crying? Yes, I was, and that's how Room In Rome became one of my favorite films ever, it just made me feel which is exactly what cinema is all about for me.
However, I hadn't rewatched it since,…
Natasha and Alba share a shower and sing "Volare" together, and for a few moments, this film leaves behind its heavy handed script and imagery, shrives itself of pretense, and allows its actresses to explode with the joy they keep telling us about. When it was over, I began listening to Italian songs in general, and now I'm hours into a Mario Lanza kick. So it has that going for it.
Mostly, though, this is a long trek through bad dialogue and overbearing metaphors (let's pan back slightly and let you see a painting of Cupid pointing his arrow right at Alba!). Forced conversations and low chemistry weakens even the most intense erotic sequences, though some of them are still interesting, at least. It slowly unveils its plot, revealing that it's more or less an attempt at mixing a cliche lesbian plot with Before Sunrise unsuccessfully.

Julio Medem's "Room in Rome" is a serviceable romantic drama whose weakest elements almost completely cancel out its strongest. Following two women who come together for a period of emotional and physical exploration, the film's balance of high and lowlights makes for a mediocre experience.
Medem's film begins after its two protagonists meet in Rome and begin a romantic liaison in an Italian hotel room. Their paring is brief, but the two learn much about one another. Lies, truths, stories manufactured to invent a certain persona, the audience, like each woman, may never become acquainted with the reality behind each character but each cuts a compelling figure.
The narrative and production are impressively minimal, and the film's controlled geography allows…
Room in Rome had the elements to be a provocative erotic film that tells the fleeting but passionate one night stand between two women who unexpectedly, and in the complicity of that intimate space, end up revealing themselves, their desires, and fears. Unfortunately, it is nothing of the sort. This is a rather banal work that pretends to be poetic and profound, but it is simply inconsequential and empty, not to mention the fact that Medem's voyeuristic gaze is rather excessive. The effort and daring of Anaya and Yarovenko, who do what they can with really poor material, is to be applauded nonetheless.
I guess that the best thing that I got out of this film is to reminisce about the love affaire I myself had almost twenty years ago precisely in Rome, a memory that I hold very dearly and that I refuse to let it fade away.
