  Propulsive, one of the best debuts I've seen in a while. First time jitters are there - critique of the neocolonial "patriotism" movement is a little simplistic, also framed in a gangster-movie rise and fall that drags a bit - but I just love how this man moves his camera. Watch Philippe Lacôte. He's got a great film in him (this isn't quite it).

  Also my first Cannes "collective gasp at an act of violence" moment. Not gonna lie, that was pretty electric.

  Sehr schräger und einzigartiger Film allein schon deshalb weil er aus der Elfenbeinküste kommt, aber auch weil die Erzählweise konstant sehr sprunghaft ist. Das und die anfangs sehr weirden Dialoge können einen sehr schnell abturnen. Am Ende hat diese Mischung aus Mystik, Politik und komischen Humor aber eine eigenartige Sogkraft. Wobei ich zugeben muss das über den Film nachdenken unterhaltsamer ist als ihn eigentlich zu sehen.

  Philippe Lacôte is one more movie away from blowing the fuck up on the international stage à la Céline Sciamma; I am very intent on manifesting this into being. 

  After being totally blown away by this past year’s Night of Kings, I decided to check out Run, Lacôte’s debut feature and in many ways the precursor for all of the cultural/political elements that would solidify in his sophomore masterpiece. While not as polished as Night of Kings, nor as ambitious in its magical realism, Run is an expertly crafted modern parable that moves with incredible deftness and once again astounded me with its visual slickness and potent ability to wed political fact with the light surreality of fable and folklore.…

  A simple, direct, vaguely political magical realist film that spins three good yarns out of a fairly conventional flashback structure. The biggest speed bumps are the seams between the episodes, the connective tissue isn't very artful, but the clumsiness quickly fades away while the plot moves relentlessly forward. Overall a skilled and beguiling distillation of the feeling of a time and place, made with openness and authenticity. We were told that in the Ivory Coast, where this film was made and truly needs to be seen, there are a total of three theatres. I hope it sells out at every one.

  История жизни молодого человека из Кот-д'Ивуара, подстрелившего премьер-министра. Криминально-политическая драма с щепоткой магического реализма, смотрелось оригинально, но не без ненужных "фестивальных" длиннот. Кино про сказки в тюрьме понравилось больше.
