Saint Maud brings nothing worth noting to the "pious women under the influence" sub-genre, despite its tremendous hype and heart-wrenching premise. It's unfortunately the most disappointing release I've seen this year so far.
As a chilling story about a nurse who turns to God for "guidance" after a traumatizing accident, Saint Maud feels rightfully like a full length debut. Despite director Rose Glass' visible efforts to amp up the intensity and suspense, Saint Maud is still somewhat faceless in style, with sound and visuals that simply resemble every other indie horror release in recent years.
