"Well, here’s another nice bucket of suds you’ve gotten me into"
Stan & Ollie's last film for Hal Roach Studios begins with the lads working in an obnoxious horn factory where the never ending noise is so nerve-racking that Hardy is diagnosed with hornophobia that’s on the verge of being a full blow case of hornomania! The doctor recommends a sea voyage for some rest and relaxation, but of course things don’t go as planned.
BONUS POINTS for the Stan’s awesome little throw away bits, including the act of eating a banana like it’s corn-on-the-cob.
”You can talk until doomsday,
but you’re not going to get me out on any ocean”
Stan-Logik 🤪. Doch wer hätte das gedacht: Der Plan…

Saps at Sea is the 1940 comedy directed by Gordon Douglas. Starring Stanely Laurel, Oliver Hardy and Richard Cramer this is the story of two friends who rent a boat only to find their relaxing break disturbed by a wanted criminal.
We've had Stan eating a boiled egg before but now Saps at Sea gifts us the experience of him eating a banana! It's these little moments that can be most memorable as both Stan and Ollie carry on providing delightful comedies up till the end of their time with Hal Roach. The pacing let's this one down at times and the boat slightly restricts the opportunities for gags, I actually found the sequences leading up to the boat best. My favourite part is the musical fridge, a great segment.

“Well you can fool the Doctor some of the time. You can't fool the Doctor part of the time, because you've only been fooling yourself all of the time.”
The Horn Testing Department is a helluva place to find the lads at work. An Ambulance has just taken away the fourth employee driven to breakdown in a week by the G-Flat Horn. Olly’s so wound up by the cacophony – he’s sent home with “hornophobia”. Plot! There’s a set-up here that will have an actual pay-off! I now know this to be the last of the pictures the boys did with Hal Roach, & I feel it was a satisfying enough compilation of them at their best with which to move…
Might not be Laurel & Hardy at their very best, but at least they get to do what comes most natural to them without added irrelevant romances and fairy tale elements like happened at the MGM lot. Simple two idiots making fools of themselves for an hour. And that's exactly what we want from Laurel & Hardy.
Perhaps fitting that L&H’s final film for Hal Roach ends with a surprisingly rousing blast of the cuckoo song, Ollie saying the “here’s another nice mess” line and Stan whimpering.
The story is all over the place in this one but it’s full of laughs and just great seeing the boys amongst several of the great supporting players of the Roach era one last time.
I laugh disproportionately loudly every time I see that door bell explode off the wall and into Ollie’s face.
Not one of their best. Too often it felt like Laurel & Hardy playing Laurel & Hardy and the score was distractingly over the top. But there were no subplots, it wasn't too long and there were still far more laughs to be had than with the average comedy. Always good to see Ben Turpin and James Finlayson too.
Ollies Nerven liegen blank,
Ihn macht sein Job noch völlig krank.
Den Dauerlärm von Hupenchören
Kann der Ärmste nicht mehr hören.
Um sich wieder zu erholen,
Hat der Doktor ihm empfohlen,
Sich auf Seefahrt zu begeben
Und von Ziegenmilch zu leben.
"Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard, to get her poor dog a bone. But when she came there, the cupboard was bare, and so the poor dog had none. Poor dog… She went to the bakers to buy him some bread, but when she came back, the poor dog was... Ah, gee… She took a clean dish to get him some tripe, but when she came back, he was smoking her pipe."
Three shorts for the price of one! The final film from the boys for Hal Roach Studios may not be their best work, slightly wanting in creativeness and without any truly memorable gags — yet Laurel & Hardy remain as funny and delightful as they ever were. Their final moment is a terrific conclusion to their body of work for Roach.
Klassisch gut.
In an attempt to cure Ollie's nervous breakdown, the boys end up sailing on a boat with a dangerous criminal. Even more disjointed than usual, this Laurel & Hardy feature feels like three two-reelers were patched together without much thought, but it still has its funny moments - a surreal opening in a horn factory and a string of increasingly disastrous domestic incidents (starring James Finlayson and with a cameo of Ben Turpin).
