"Private is private."
Why are you doing a documentary then?
This film is oddly paced and a frustrating glimpse into a sports legend most Americans know nothing about. It somehow simultaneously gives us a look into who Michael Schumacher was, while at the same time telling us almost nothing about him.
For instance - you have no idea he has children until the final 20 minutes.
Did you know he raced against his brother, Ralf at the elite level of F1 for many, many years? Never mentioned once. Seems like fertile ground for a few minutes worth of discussion.
Did you know that when he broke down crying for matching Senna's win record, he wasn't even at the halfway point…
Outstanding documentary. As a lifelong fan of the sport, I'm maybe a little biased (OK, a lot biased), but this really captured the fierce competitor and sensitive family man that is, for me, the best ever in Formula 1 racing.
Never one to take the easy route, Michael Schumacher seemed to actively search out the teams that needed a driver that could lift their performance and again and again, he delivered the goods against some of the best in the business.
I remember watching that interview when he broke down after being told he'd equalled his hero Ayrton Senna's race wins, and seeing this again today sent a shiver down my spine.
Well-designed, not overly-dramatised and with a terrific balance…
Nearly 2 hours of promoting and reminding Micheal Schumacher's status as a legend. In my opinion, Senna remains the superior documentary.
thinking about how after schumacher retired, sebastian vettel took on his legacy: racing in that iconic red ferrari, nicknamed baby schumi by the fans, those nine wins in a row in 2013. and how then in turn, seb became a mentor to mick schumacher – i remember when mick called seb his only friend in formula one – almost like seb is a vessel for michael’s legacy. idk man this doc is amazing and i can’t stop thinking about michael’s career in relation to seb and mick, to the winners after, the winners still to come... and those final moments, where mick says he would give up everything to talk to michael again... im gonna cry man i really am
also when i had a look at the letterboxd reviews literally every single one was about how lovable seb vettel is and it’s like yeah. no man compares. we are all beguiled by him. netflix WHERE is his doc
Abit of a disappointing puff piece to be honest. It’s well made and it’s ok, but we learn little other than Schumacher was a great F1 driver, which we knew.
The propaganda movie reinforcing the legend shies away from any of his controversies, quickly noting them and brushing them under the rug. At one point it blames him being a Capricorn for refusing to apologise for infamously crashing into Villeneuve.
Other great documentary movies about individuals, which I think are great, show them at their highest and their lowest. The Amy Winehouse, Senna, Ferguson films all do a class job of this. Just noting how good he is, glossing over his misdemeanours and relegating his accident to the last 10…
It's no secret that I am not a huge sports fan, although I am always up for a movie or documentary about any character in about every sports field there is.
With that in mind, and with all the positive reviews, I was eager to find out more about this individual who has apparently made quite a name for himself in the world of Formula 1. I'm not going to lie, knowing names like Senna gave me a sense of familiarity, which in turn helped me get more invested. Add to that the journey of this man to fame, plus you also get to learn more about the business, which is equally compelling – especially everything to do with Ferrari…
Ich weiß nicht, wo es nasser war, beim Regenchaos von Spa 1998 oder in meinem Gesicht beim Abspann dieses Films. 😭
