A conflict rages on a distant planet between a mining company named ’New Economic Bloc' (NEB) and a group of miners named ‘The Alliance’. The Alliance having dispatched a series of self / human-replicating robots (‘Screamers’) to assist them in their battle. NEB Commander ‘Hendricksson’ (Weller) is sent in to diffuse and manage the siutation.
Sci-fi / horror, based on the Philip K. Dick short story ‘Second Variety’. Creative, tense, ambuiguous, thought provoking and stylish - though somewhat saggy (this could’ve benefitted from a tighter edit), and littered with familiar tropes and characters. An interesting premise, generally well executed - boasting some genuinely creepy moments. Exploring themes concerning societal collapse, and the threat of the machine turning against its maker - itself creating an unnerving, pervasive paranoia. The VFX are a little dated, the performances are generally flat. An enjoyable gem nonetheless.
