  Simon Barrett’s Supernatural tinged murder mystery whodunnit slasher giallo has been high on my watch list for a while—seemingly feeling like it would be right up my alley and for the most part it was.

  There’s a few moments here and there in the first act where I felt like this could’ve used a bit more spunk and a little story tightening… but color me surprised on how this went for a more subdued path before eventually letting loose with the bloodshed in the third act.   The best Scream movie since 1996.

  As a long time fan of Simon Barrett's writing I've been looking forward to his directorial debut, but this effected me emotionally in ways that I wasn't prepared for. A feeling of loss permeates through Seance from its opening frames, yet this melancholic banger never loses its sense of fun. Everyone is bringing their A-game from costuming to score and indie GOAT Karim Hussain reinvents his visual stylings flawlessly with this cold, slick, flare heavy aesthetic. Honestly can't think of a better lead for this story than Suki Waterhouse, her ethereal presence compliments the narrative perfectly.

  Idk how much more I can say about Seance without going into a full spoiler review, but I suspect this story was incredibly cathartic for Simon Barrett to tell. A beautiful tribute to lost friends and my favorite slasher in years.

  I’ve been wanting to watch this ever since my boy Stephen Steinbacher raves about it and it did not disappoint! I loved the spooky winter boarding school vibes. I love all boarding school horror movie vibes! Just like Ian West said in his review, this has heavy The House that Screamed energy and that’s the 1969 film not the 2000 Polonia film which is equally amazing, but nothing like this.

  Suki Waterhouse carries it, but I enjoyed the film overall. There were some really fun sfx that I appreciated. However, there were also some holes in the plot that kind of got explained but nothing too elaborate - I definitely still had a few questions by the end of it. 

  Would still recommend! Especially if you’re into teen horror.

  The Slasher is coming back around as of late I see, with a healthy serving of Giallo influence as well. The script felt a little subdued compared to some of what we've seen from Barrett in the past, but by the end got there, and as a debut directorial effort it's well done. A great atmosphere that's a little bit eerie, and a little bit comfy. I was really into the score as well, it comes off as simple at times, but it always caught my ear.

  It was just a little bit below average for me I have to say. These female themed slasher boarding school sorority type things just don’t hit it home these days, guaranteed if this were made in the 90s or early 2000s (see The Woods, Black XMas) it would’ve been great but these days they’re all just lacking that special ingredient to make them worthy, this actually felt like it was missing a few things tbh.

  Solid cast led by Suki Waterhouse. New girl shows up at an all girl's school after the death of another student. She meets the local mean girls and a friendly face then a slasher-esque murder mystery with supernatural vibes ensues. Held my attention as I was clueless to who or what was behind the deaths. The kills were pretty lamey tamey up until the last 20 mins or so which featured two very bloody n brutal kills that caught me by surprise.

  Not very original but it was still a worthwhile watch. I'd watch it again.
