my favorite character in this shimmeringly fun but instantly forgettable con artist mishegoss? you guessed it: New York City!
For a while, Sharper was giving me exactly what I needed from a February thriller: an engaging, fun story with countless plot twists and a great cast. Unfortunately, this really fell apart in the third act, crossing every line of believability and overdoing the concept to the point that probably looked like the biggest plot twist of them all on paper, but in reality was just painfully obvious and predictable.
Then again, are you really going to skip a movie in which Julianne Moore and Sebastian Stan are conning people while looking hot and dangerous?
There are some twists that work, some that are telegraphed, and very few of them that are believable…BUT…it’s a fun, well-acted little thriller. Most importantly this type of movie doesn’t get made enough anymore and can only survive with a brief peek in a few hundred theaters and dumped straight to streaming.
In the 90s this would have been packed with Kim Basingers, Halle Berry’s, Michael Douglases, and Catherine Zeta-Jones’ and made a bunch of money. Y’all are lame now.
