2005 ‘Shinobi’ Directed by Ten Shimoyama
Even though Gennosuke and Oboro are from rival ninja villages, they are secretly in love. At an annual conference with the Lord, it is dictated that a competition--a fight to the death--will take place between the five best shinobi from each village. Gennosuke and Oboro's love is made even more impossible when they each got picked as the leader of the five to represent their respective villages.

For your fill of Shinobeo & Ninjuliett star-crossed romance, eye-gouging photography of lush forests and rivers and mountains under perpetual twilight or the pink glow of Magic Hour, music swelling to appropriately epic volumes, costumes that could only work in movies but you wish they were real life, a guy with a swank mullet, terrible visual effects, this film provides.
Despite the sappy title and a poster featuring a boy & girl locked in embrace, this film does feature some brutal ninja fighting, but only to distract from the forbidden ninja love story which is obviously the reason why anyone would watch this movie.
The whole film is but an adequate explanation why the Iga and the Koga don't just team up…
Japanische Romeo und Julia Version. Der tolle Score und die abgefahrenen Kämpfe der ebenso abgefahrenen KriegerInnen bzw. ZauberInnen retten spielend über die dünne Lovestory hinweg, auch wenn nicht alle Effekte gut gealtert sind.
Macht aber richtig Spaß.

Here we see the Capulet’s and Montague’s, whoops I mean Iga and Kouga clans duke it out full live action anime style for the entertainment of the Shogunate.
And in true Shakespeare tradition we have a Juliet aka Oboro Capulet (Iga) and Romeo aka Gennosuke Montague (Kouga). Who fall in love and have a secret wedding before they are both fated to each other’s demise.
Throw in a little bonus Oedipus Rex and you got yourself a fine film. 👌

I found it difficult to keep up with what was at the heart of the story in Shinobi - Heart Under Blade. This also didn't help with characters disappearing and just as quickly reappearing after having seemingly been killed in very violent circumstances. However, it does display some very unique visuals and fight choreography and great pathos in some of its quieter moments.

This felt very much like my formative years (early 2000’s) with hairstyles and heartaches.
Don't be put off by the mid-2000s special effects, Shinobi: Heart Under Blade would be very deserving to be regarded as martial-arts cult classic. Almost as if was a live-action adaptation of Naruto, the five champions of two shinobi clans are to face each other to decide their fate. The Shakespearean tragedy is that they are respectively lead by two lovers recently married in secret.
This is all in terms of plot. From then on, the audience is graced with martial-arts action based on the supernatural abilities of the opponents. I absolutely loved their powers, including the deadly grace, the disturbing acquisition of another face, tentacles used as weapon, a ninja suffering from his invincible demonic nature, and his cure…
It was okay the CGI bird at times was annoying but the story was decent and different Shinobi powers whir cool I was engaged the whole time probably wont watch again though but no regrets
Uh oh, well this hadn’t aged well in the slightest. One of the most visually ugly films I’ve seen in a while.. some moments equate to a small proportion of fun but mostly this is a stale drag.
Obore lemah bgt sih karakternya, gemes sendiri. Tp suka bgt adegan endingnya, sm ending kisah romancenya. Klo fightnya, lebih epik Mumon.
Raised with the sole purpose of fighting and dying. Raised only for their destiny.
Then there were the 2 star crossed lovers who found meaning to life more than combat.
Beautifully shot and crafted, overall great.

Me gusta que los japoneses, sin importar lo ridiculo que se ven tratando de adaptar cualquier anime o manga, lo hacen muy padre. En este caso, sustituyen las carencias en producción y efectos especiales, con una historia simple, pero solida y envolvente.
Me imagino esta pelicula con presupuesto hollywoodense, mega hit.
