What a mesmerizing, completely explosive visual feast this was! I had never heard of him at all, but I guess many of us have seen his work of the 2008 Olympics ceremony.
I knew Zhang Yimou was the director but to see even more about the artistry behind that production was fascinating. His statements on making art in China as something essentially always political, yet unchangeable, incited some new realizations of privilege that I’ve never quite acknowledged for Western artists.
Yet, somehow, I still felt like this was a thoroughly eye-opening, less political production that truly showcased the artist, the art, the awe-inspiring realization of a life’s dream, and the inevitable legacy that will surely follow.
