  This documentary may be biased in LeMond's favour but it's done entertainingly so. It has an eye for knowing where the drama is - LeMond, the plucky American, pitting up against the wily Frenchman, Bernard Hinault - his own team-mate, a 5 time Tour de France winner. When it gets to the meat of the story (it takes a bit of time to get there), we just see the scope of LeMond's paranoia, Hinault's reflections and the rather shady team boss who likes to think "there are no leaders in this team" in 1986. And of course, Bernard 'Match Fixing' Tapie.

  A riveting and eerie film about the friendship/rivalry of Greg Lemond and Bernard Hinault as the former helped the latter win the 1985 Tour de France with Lemond hoping that Hinault would return the favor a year later only for backstage politics and such to try and ruin things as it play into the world of cycling and the dark underbelly of the Tour de France before the emergence of doping and Lance Armstrong.

  This isn't a great documentary from a technical perspective, nor is it an accessible film for outsiders. But there is something enchanting about a treacherous intra-team slugfest that's the calm before the storm of the paradigm-shifting doping era of cycling.

  John Dower's direction crafts a chaotic first act that does little to coherently lay the groundwork for the meat of the film. It's an almost fatal blow--but those willing to stick with it are rewarded with well-edited sequences that not only logistically lay out the stakes of each stage of the world famous Tour de France but also try to keep up with each of the main players both then and now.   Cycling has lost a lot of it's shine in recent years so the story of two greats that battled it out, one to be the first to six and one to be the first American champion makes for a very compelling story. Here's the real kicker though... they were teammates!

  I love Greg Lemond but holy shit Bernard Hinault is WILD. The anecdote about him finishing a race with a face covered in blood after a crash, telling his young terrified son to touch his blood covered nose saying “see? It’s nothing.” What the fuck bro? Wonder what that kid grew up to be.

  Holpriger, hektisch geschnittener Dokumentarfilm über die Rivalität der Teamkollegen Greg LeMond und Bernard Hinault während der Tour de France Mitte der 80er.
  Dass LeMond hier als Sympathieträger rüberkommt und Hinault (Spitzname: der Dachs) als egozentrischer Heuchler, mag der Tatsache geschuldet sein, dass wir eine US-Produktion vor uns haben.
  Wie unangenehm vor allem der ehemalige Teamchef Koechli auftritt, ist aber mindestens sehenswert.
  Und an den alten Rennaufnahmen, die einfach komplett Wahnsinnige ohne Helm bei halsbrecherischen Abfahrten oder Zielsprints zeigen, kann ich mich eh nicht sattsehen.

  Documentary about the rivalry and outright dislike between cycling teammates Greg Lemond and Bernard Hinault who cycled together in the Tour de France in the mid 80’s.  Fascinating story as they tried to prevent Lemond from becoming the first American to win the prestigious race by having him help his ungrateful teammate instead. 
  Great documentary about a sport I care very little about.
