We need 400 cases of Coors beer delivered to a racetrack in Georgia and you have 28 hours to get it done. That’s pretty much the plot of the coolest CB / trucker / police chase / badass car movie ever made, Smokey and the Bandit. Burt Reynolds is Bandit. Jerry Reed is Bandit’s partner in crime, Snowman. Fred is Snowman’s lazy and always hungry, hound dog. Sally Field is the runaway bride, Carrie. Plus, the larger than life, Jackie Gleason is Sheriff Buford T Justice. The lawman that will stop at nothing to bring Bandit to justice.
Think of Smokey and the Bandit as one big chase. The entire runtime consists of Bandit and Snowman smuggling the Coors beer…
“Smokey and the Bandit” is a charmingly self-aware idiot piece of social cinema.
The film comes with simple encouragements: Be a redneck. Do crimes. Drive loud cars. Bootleg watery beer.
Just don’t be a cop.
“Smokey,” like Sam Peckinpah’s “Convoy,” is a product of the late 1970s CB Radio craze. Before private group chats, truckers and the weirdos of the world would communicate anonymously over actual air waves.
The fad was an anarchic bit of information rebellion; arriving right when the worst enemy of everyone…. was the state patrol: self-anointed enforcers of the 55 mph speed limit on all American highways due to a nationwide fuel shortage.
“Smokey,” about a cross-state bootleg run of Coors beer, channels with blithe charisma…
Watched this at the Swan Drive-In Theater in North Georgia, which was blissful in and of itself.
The film isn’t without its casual 70s racism/misogyny, but my lord the car chases and one-liners are fun. Half the movie is genuinely funny, the other half is funny because it’s dated. A perfect drive-in movie! Plus: now that Ansel Elgort is on the way out, is this the superior Baby Driver?
In what could have been just a silly movie, a stellar cast, led by Burt Reynolds, makes Smokey and the Bandit a fun ride. There is chemistry in spades from Sally Field and Jackie Gleason to Paul Williams and Jerry Reed. Many of the car stunts are outstanding, expected from director Hal Needham, and a lively soundtrack and quick pace keep things rolling non-stop. One of the better car/road films out there and certainly a highlight of Reynolds career and the decade. It doesn't get more 70s/80s southern than this.
It’s been about 35 years since I last saw this and hoo doggie what a gas. Hal Needham always had a light foot on the tonal pedal and this country confection is no different, with low stakes (COORS!) great casting, killer stunts, an amazing soundtrack, Fred the dog... and of course, Burt being Burt. I miss that laugh so much.
