Gene Autry and his buddy Smiley Burnette goes undercover South of the Border (1939) and finds themselves in the middle of a mini-revolution. A okay entry into the Autry catalog, made even more pleasant by young actress Mary Lee joining in the singing. Still a typical Autry affair.
This is considered one of Gene Autry's most popular films for good reason - the music is nearly wall to wall and includes Gene crooning from a crystal ball, Mary Lee yodeling on the sofa and Frog singing for his life in a rough cantina. The movie also sports a rare instance of Gene believably falling for a woman (played by the beautiful Lupita Tovar) and an even rarer unhappy ending. The songs are very good, the plot is passable and the direction is better than average. It's not my favorite Autry movie but certainly has all the right components.
